Double-Doubles Help Tigers Topple Tulsa on Senior Day
Feb 28, 2016 | Men's Basketball
Shaq Goodwin and Dedric Lawson record double-doubles in win
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Behind a 28-point, 11-rebound double-double from senior Shaq Goodwin and a 27-point, 12-rebound double-double from freshman Dedric Lawson, the Memphis Tigers held off a first-half Tulsa run, and won for the fifth time this season when trailing at halftime. The Tigers out-scored Tulsa 46-35 in the second half for the 92-82 senior-day win.
For Goodwin it was his 16th career double-double, and seventh of the season, while Lawson recorded his 14th double-double of the season.
Trahson Burrell added 11 points, while senior Kedren Johnson – in his first start of the season – scored a season-high 10 points in 17 minutes of action. Burrell finished a rebound shy of a double-double, while Dedric Lawson dished out a career-high six assists.
The Tigers shot 59.3 percent in the second half and 53.8 percent (28-of-52) for the game, while converting on 5-of-11 three-pointers. Memphis out-rebounded Tulsa 40-to-25 in the game, and had 18 assists against 15 turnovers while blocking six shots.
Tulsa opened the scoring in the game; however, after giving up a field goal 14 seconds into the game, the Tiger defense tightened, holding Tulsa without a basket for the next 5:15 of game-play time, while opening a 10-point, 14-4 lead five and a half minutes into the contest.
With the Tigers leading by 11 at 27-16 with 9:07 to play in the game after a Burrell made three-pointer, Tulsa opened a 11-0 run to tie the score at 27 following a three-point play from Shaquille Harrison.
The rest of the half went back-and-forth, with three tie scores and seven lead changes coming in the final four minutes of the half, as Tulsa took a 47-46 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Lawson took over in the second half for Memphis, scoring 21 of his 27 points in the stanza, including the first seven of the half, giving Memphis a lead it would not relinquish with a three-pointer three minutes into the period.
Tulsa fought back to tie the score as late as 5:55; however, Memphis ran off six straight points on lay-ins from Goodwin, Lawson, and Johnson, giving the hosts a cushion in the American Athletic Conference late-season battle.
The Tiger advantage fluctuated between seven and three points for the majority of the final ten minutes of the game, with the first exception coming when Tulsa closed to within one. After seeing its lead cut to a single point, Memphis ran off six straight points to lead 76-69.
Leading by four with just under three minutes to play, Memphis scored eight straight points to take the margin to double-digits, as the Tigers held on for the 92-82 win over the Golden Hurricane.
Harrison scored a team-high 20 points for Tulsa, while Marquel Curtis scored 16 and Sterling Taplin 15 in the losing effort.
