Tigers Fall at Conference-Leading Temple

Ricky Tarrant Jr. scores a game-high 18 points in the loss
PHILADELPHIA – Ricky Tarrant Jr. scored 18 points, Shaq Goodwin 16 points, and Dedric Lawson recorded his 15th double-double of the season; however, the Memphis Tigers fell 72-62 to the Temple Owls on Thursday evening.
Tarrant Jr. hit half of his 16 shots from the field and 2-of-5 from long range, while Goodwin went 5-of-10 and 6-of-8 from the charity stripe.
Lawson scored 13 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, as he moved into a tie with Lorenzen Wright into a tie for second-most freshman double-doubles in a season, and 13th among all classes.
The Tigers out-rebounded Temple 41-to-39, as Goodwin, Tarrant Jr., and Avery Woodson each grabbed five boards. Tarrant Jr. dished out four assists, while Goodwin and Woodson added three assists apiece.
Memphis struck first in the game on a free throw by Goodwin; however, Temple answered with nine straight points, taking a 9-1 lead and forcing a Memphis timeout two and a half minutes into the game.
The Tigers fought back, using a 7-2 run – capped by a Kedren Johnson jumper – to climb to within three points three minutes later.
Temple pushed back and extended its lead to a dozen points with 7:56 to play, but the Tigers got a three-pointer from Tarrant, a pair of free throws from Goodwin, and a Tarrant lay-in to climb back to within five.
The hosts, playing in their senior day – the second of three straight "Senior Days" played in by the Tigers – pushed its lead to nine at 39-30 heading into the locker room at halftime.
In the second half Temple came out of the break strong, increasing its lead to as many as 13 points, and by 12 with 9:56 to play in the game.
The Tigers started to claw their way back, using an 11-2 run over a five and a half minute span, climbing to within three on a Woodson three pointer. In all, the Tiger defense held Tempe to just one field goal over an eight-minute span, climbing back to within a three-pointer with 4:33 to play in the contest.
After seeing its lead cut a single possession, Temple ran off a 10-2 run – pushing its lead to 11, before settling at its final margin of 10 at 72-62.
Memphis hit 23 of its 60 shots in the game – a percentage of .383, while knocking down 6-of-16 (37.5%) from long range and 10-of-13 (76.9%) from the charity stripe.
Temple was led by Jaylen Bond, who had a 15-point, 10-rebound double-double in the win.
The Tigers return to action on Sunday, March 6, in a 3 p.m. (CT) against the Pirates of East Carolina.
