Tigers Dominate in 30-Point Win over Pirates

Four players reach double-figures in win
GREENVILLE, N.C. – Memphis shot 54 percent from the field and Avery Woodson scored a season-high 20 points, as Memphis topped the East Carolina Pirates 83-53 in the final tune-up for the Tigers' American Athletic Conference Tournament appearance.
Woodson's six made three-pointers tied a career-high, while his 20 points are a season-best for the junior. Shaq Goodwin scored 17 points and pulled down a game-high eight rebounds. Dedric Lawson added 14 points, as Trahson Burrell scored 13 points with six assists and a career-high five steals.
The Tigers hit 34-of-63 from the field (54.0 percent), and 10-of-23 (43.5 percent) from beyond the arc. Memphis held East Carolina to 38.2 percent shooting from the field (21-of-55) and 4-of-25 (16.0 percent) from three-point range.
Memphis was out-rebounded 35-to-32, and had 24 assists – the second-highest single-game total this season - on 34 made field goals while committing just 10 turnovers on the offensive end.
East Carolina struck first in the game, before a Burrell three-pointer kicked off a 7-0 Tiger run that put the visitors ahead by five at 7-2. The hosts fought back, and led by two at 20-18 with 9:21 to play in the opening half.
Trailing by two, the Tigers ran off a 9-0 run, and after a basket by Michael Zangari, Memphis ran off ten straight points. In all, Memphis closed the first half on a 23-4 run, leading 41-26 heading into the locker room at halftime.
The Pirates scored the first four points out of the halftime break, cutting the gap to 11. After leading by 11 with 18:08 to play, the Tigers ran off a second 23-4 run, pushing ahead to a 30-point, 66-36 lead, nine minutes later, as Memphis cruised over the final nine minutes to an 83-53 victory.
East Carolina was led by B.J. Tyson who scored 12 points, as Michel Nzege scored 11, and Caleb White added 10.
The Tigers will face off against Tulsa on Friday, March 11, in an 8 p.m. tip-off at the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida. The game will be broadcast on ESPNU.
