Tigers playing at No. 19 Ole Miss Sunday.
MEMPHIS – The No. 28 ranked Memphis men's tennis team (5-2) is back in action Sunday, after a two week break in matches, and will face a tough test in their first match back as the team travels to Oxford to face No. 19 ranked Ole Miss (3-1), Sunday, at 1 p.m. Ole Miss is coming in to the match off a 4-3 win at then-No. 4 ranked Baylor. The match will also be the Tigers' first match outdoors if the weather Sunday holds up. The match will moved indoors to the Gillom Sports Center in the event of rain.
"Ole Miss has a really balanced lineup," Tiger head coach Paul Goebel said. "They are as strong in the bottom part of their lineup as they are at the top, so it's going to be a big test for us on the road."
After suffering a 4-1 loss at another SEC opponent, No. 6 ranked Georgia, Memphis has won four straight matches, picking up wins over #27 Vanderbilt and No. 32 ranked Harvard in Nashville in their last competition weekend.
The young Tiger lineup has been led by the sophomore class in the early going. Ryan Peniston broke in to the national singles rankings at No. 46 with a perfect 3-0 mark at number one and a 3-0 mark at number two. Fellow sophomore Andrew Watson has spent most of his collegiate career in the national singles rankings, and is currently No. 87 with a 14-6 overall singles mark, including a 3-1 mark at number two singles. Kai Lemke has figured in to the mix at number three singles for Memphis, carrying a 15-5 overall mark and a 4-1 record in dual season play in to the weekend.
This will be this young Tiger lineup's first trip to Oxford, as the two teams took a break in their series history last season. It marks the beginning of a tough four-match swing of matches, as the Tigers will go on a Texas/Oklahoma swing next week to face conference foe SMU (No. 53), and Big 12 members Baylor (No. 13) and Oklahoma (No. 8).
