Memphis goes on the road to Tulane Friday, Houston Sunday
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Finish strong. They are two words many sports teams use as motivation for a game or a season.
For the University of Memphis volleyball program, it can be seen as a solid analysis of how the Tigers have played in recent seasons. From 2012-15, Memphis posted a 15-9 record in its last six matches, including a 9-3 mark the last two campaigns.
With their late pushes the last two seasons, the Tigers also moved their way into the top-five of the league standings. Head coach April Jauregui is looking for the same from her 2016 squad as it begins its final six-match run this weekend.
"As we enter the final stretch of the season, everyone is focused on finishing strong," said Jauregui. "We want a strong finish not only for our senior class, but also to make a run at the highest finish possible in the conference standings. I am pleased with how the team keeps working and fighting to get better."
Memphis faces Tulane and Houston for a second time this season. The Tigers travel to New Orleans, La., first for a Friday, Nov. 11 encounter with the Green Wave at 7 p.m. (CT), before moving on to Houston, Texas, Sunday, Nov. 13 to meet the Cougars in a 1 p.m. (CT) match.
The Tigers swept the Houston-Tulane weekend when the two American Athletic Conference foes visited the Elma Roane Fieldhouse Oct. 21-23. Memphis defeated the Cougars 3-0 in a hard-fought contest Oct. 21 and then outlasted the Green Wave in a 3-2 marathon Oct. 23.
Jauregui expects similar match-ups with both opponents this weekend.
"Tulane is a very strong team, and it was neck-and-neck last time we played them," Jauregui said. "I know what we did to win that match, and I think we can prepare to put our best on the floor. I expect an energetic and competitive match.
"Houston is super athletic and is a much better team than its record indicates. They have the ability to go on runs and have some young players eager to win. We must go into that match with the same intensity and focus as every other opponent."
Memphis enters this weekend's conference action with some momentum. Last week, the Tigers posted a 1-1 record with a 3-2 victory over USF and a 3-1 setback to UCF.
In last weekend's action, senior Catlin Lilly hit a milestone with her 1,000th career dig. She also has 1,000 career kills and is only the 11th player in program history to hit both marks. Fellow senior Michaella Moss was named to the American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll for her performance. In the 3-2 victory over USF, Moss posted her first double-double and registered career highs for kills (18) and hitting percentage (.485).
