Bierria's 13 kills, Comperry's double-double paces the Memphis effort.
NEW ORLEANS, La. – University of Memphis' Tai Bierria posted double-digit kills and Regan Comperry recorded a double-double, but Tulane came away with a 3-0 American Athletic Conference volleyball victory Friday. The Green Wave won the match by scores of 25-23, 25-16 and 25-17.
With the setback, the Tigers fell to 12-15 overall and 4-11 in league action. Tulane improved to 16-12 overall and 8-8 in The American.
Memphis looks to get back in the win column Sunday, Nov. 13 when it travels to Houston, Texas, to face the Cougars. Match time in 1 p.m. (CT).
"We were not in sync offensively tonight, and we couldn't generate runs," said head coach April Jauregui. "Last time we played we were able to minimize one of their strong attackers, and while we had the same game plan, unfortunately we were unable to do that tonight. We had some solid individual performances, but we didn't execute at a level to win.
"This team has the heart to fight and win. It just wasn't clicking tonight. We will regroup tomorrow and look to get the win on Sunday."Â
Bierria, a freshman, led Memphis with a team-best 13 kills and added eight digs. The double-digit kills match was her fifth of the season. Comperry collected her eighth double-double of the campaign with 17 assists and 10 digs.
Mady Ruhlman had a team-high 20 digs for her fifth 20-dig match of the season and the eighth of her career. Faith Myers nearly posted a double-double with 13 assists and eight digs.
Memphis' most competitive set of the match was the opening one that had 11 ties and six lead changes. The first set was tied at 5-all, and a 6-2 Tigers' run gave the visitors from the Bluff City an 11-7 advantage. Kills from Bierria and fellow freshman Brianna Kadiku paced the Memphis spurt.
Tulane, though, responded with a 9-3 run to regain the lead at 16-14. Memphis stayed within striking distance and moved out to a 22-20 lead on three-straight Bierria kills. Moments later, a Catlin Lilly kill gave the Tigers a 23-21 lead. The Green Wave, however, closed the first set on a 4-0 run to win 25-23.
The narrow first-set loss did not affect the Tigers to open the second game. Memphis rushed out to an 8-5 advantage early. But, the Green Wave answered in a big way. Tulane outscored the Tigers 13-4 to grab an 18-12 lead it never lost the remainder of the set. Memphis got no closer than five points, and the Green Wave won the second set 25-16.
In the final set, Memphis had only one lead early at 4-3 and either was tied or trailed the rest of the way. The last tie was at 6-all, and from there, Tulane took control. The Green Wave put together a 12-5 spurt for an 18-11 advantage on the way to a 25-17 third-set victory.
