Tigers Unable to Complete Sweep of Houston
May 03, 2015 | Softball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The University of Memphis softball team dropped its series finale to the Cougars 6-1 at the Tiger Softball Complex on Sunday, but won the series two games to one.
Memphis wrapped up its regular season with a 19-33 record, and 6-12 American Athletic Conference record. It was the second-straight conference series Memphis have won after taking the final two games of the series against South Florida a weekend ago.
The Tigers celebrated senior day on Sunday, honoring the careers of redshirt-junior Wheeler Hill, junior Georganna Goodwin and senior Jordan Richwood. Hill took the starting spot in right field and grabbed the first hit of the game for Memphis in the third inning.
Houston (27-26, 10-7 AAC) scored all six of its runs in the first inning off of Katie Brignac (5-6). She threw a complete game and settled down after the initial inning. She struck out two batters and walked seven in the loss. As a team, the Cougars outhit Memphis 7-4 in the finale.
For the Cougars, Julana Shrum (12-10) took the win. She lost in game one to Jordan Richwood in the 1-0 shutout on Saturday. In Sunday's game, she went the distance and gave up only one run while striking out four.
Houston got the game started with a single to center, and then a perfectly placed bunt that died just shy of the foul line. Back-to-back walks loaded the bases and then scored the first run. After the first out occurred on a line drive, another walk put the Cougars up 2-0.
Tiffani McKnight doubled the lead with a double down the right field line, and then another single scored two more before the batter was thrown out at second.
Houston threatened again with two one-out singles, but Hill made a nice play to cut off a ball in the gap and throw out the runner attempting to stretch the single for an extra base.
Memphis had its best opportunity in the sixth inning when Kyler Trosclair and Hannah Harrell singled to leadoff the inning. Linday Crowdus reached first on an error to load the bases with nobody out. A wild pitch scored Trosclair to make it 6-1, but a ground out, strike out and ground out ended the inning and the last opportunity for Memphis.
Next up for the Tigers is the American Athletic Conference Tournament in Orlando, Fla. The Tigers are locked into the sixth seed and will face Houston again in Thursday's game.
