Baton Rouge, La. - The sixth inning doomed the University of Memphis women's softball team as they fell 7-2 in a hard-fought opening day game against No. 19 LSU on Friday afternoon at Tiger Park.
Louisiana State scored six runs in the bottom half of the sixth to take control and win the first game of the Tiger Classic, which LSU was hosting.
Memphis fell to 0-1 on the season and 5-5 in season openers in program history. Meanwhile, the Tigers moved to 1-0.
Senior pitcher Jordan Richwood threw five great innings from the circle before the highly ranked Tigers finally got to her. A leadoff single up the middle was followed by a two-run home run from Bianka Bell, who finished with three RBI on the afternoon. That gave LSU the lead for the first time.
In all, Richwood threw 96 pitches over 5.1 innings of work. She gave up eight hits and was credited with five runs, all earned. She struck out four batters and only walked one.
It was the Tigers from Memphis who drew first blood. After a scoreless first inning, freshman Brooke Lee got her collegiate career started with a base hit up the middle. After LSU got an out, Cierra Mangum came through with a single and some good base running resulted in the Tigers having second and third with one out.
After a strikeout made two outs, redshirt freshman Sami Jo Schulz came through with a shallow fly into left scoring Lee. The left fielder wasn't able to come up with the ball cleanly, and Mangum was able to come in to make it 2-0. That was the last hit of the game for Memphis.
Richwood came back strong, throwing a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the second. LSU broke through in the third, getting runners on first and second with two outs. Schulz fielded a sharply hit ball to short, but her throw was not in time. LSU had runners on the corner and were threatening, but sophomore catcher Georganna Goodwin made a fantastic throw to catch Bell attempting to steal second.
The University of Memphis returns to action Saturday morning with a 10 a.m. game against Tennessee State, followed by second game at 12:30 against N.C. State. Follow the Tigers on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram @MemphisSoftball
