Nov 27, 2015 | Men's Basketball
Shaq Goodwin Ties a Career-High with 23 Points, Scores his 1,000th Career Point
MIAMI ā Memphis senior forward Shaq Goodwin tied a career-high on Friday evening with 23 points, while Dedric Lawson had a 16-point, 10-rebound double-double, helping the Tigers to a 81-76 win over the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Ā
Goodwin hit 7-of-10 shots from the field and all nine of his free throws en route to the 23 points while Lawson and Ricky Tarrant Jr. each scored 16 points, as most of Lawson's came from his 7-of-17 performance from the field while the lion's share for Tarrant Jr. came via his 14-for-16 effort at the charity stripe. Avery Woodson added 11 points, hitting 3-of-7 long range jumpers in the win.
Ā
Lawson and Markel Crawford each dished out a team-high four assists, as Goodwin, Woodson, and Tarrant Jr. each had a pair of steals.
A Goodwin dunk with 8:09 on the first halfĀ clock not only put the Tigers within one point in the game, but also gave the Atlanta native his 1,000thĀ career point, becoming the 50thĀ player in program history to accomplish the feat.
Ā
In the first half, the teams battled back and forth, with the lead changing hands seven times, and the largest lead by either team coming at five points.
Ā
The Tigers jumped out first, using a Shaq Goodwin game-opening basket to lead 2-0, and Memphis used back-to-back baskets from Dedric Lawson and Markel Crawford to lead by four a 6-2. Ohio State responded with an 8-0 run of its own to lead by four at 10-6, and a JaQuan Lyle lay-in with 14:12 on the clock gave the Buckeyes a 12-7 lead.
Ā
Trailing 14-9, the Tigers got a free throw from Trahson Burrell, followed by a three-pointer by Burrell, a jumper from Dedric Lawson, and another free throw from Burrell to push ahead to a 16-15 lead over a two minute span, closing a 7-1 run.
Ā
Memphis fought back to lead by as many as two points on a Jeremiah Martin three-pointer with 1:40 to play in the period; however, the Buckeyes ended the first half on a 4-0 run to take a two-point, 37-35 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Ā
The Tigers struck first in the second half with a basket from Goodwin, knotting the score at 37 points apiece, before Ohio State ran off an 11-2 run to push ahead by nine, two and a half minutes into the second half.
Ā
Trailing by its largest margin of the game, Memphis rallied back, and used its own run ā a 14-2 stretch ā to give the visitors on the scoreboard a three-point advantage after a Woodson three-point basket.
Ā
A back-and-forth battle ensued, with each teams' run countered by the other. Ohio State answered a four-point deficit by streaking out to a 10-2 run, pushing the Buckeye lead to four; and with OSU leading by four at 67-63, Memphis took off for nine straight points, capped by a Lawson lay-in, giving the Tigers a five point lead with 4:32 left on the clock.
Ā
The Tigers would not trail again in the game; however, a three-pointer by Keita Bates-Diop knotted the score at 75 points apiece, and neither team could find the bottom of the net in their last chances, and the game went into an extra five-minute session.
Ā
In the overtime period, the Tiger defense clamped down, holding the Buckeyes without a field goal ā 0-6 in the extra period ā and allowed the Buckeyes just one free throw in the frame.
Ā
In the extra time the Tigers did most of their damage from the free throw line, converting on 4-of-6 at the charity stripe with the team's only field goal coming on a Goodwin basket that put Memphis ahead for good in the game.
Ā
After their return trip back, the Tigers stay at home and host the Louisiana Tech (5-0) in an 8 p.m. tip-off at FedExForum on December 1.
