Tigers’ Balanced Attack Leads to 94-68 Win over Louisiana Tech
Dec 01, 2015 | Men's Basketball
Memphis places five in double figures; Goodwin, Burrell collect double-doubles
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Five Memphis players scored double figures as the Tigers closed the Hall of Fame Classic with a convincing 94-68 win over previously undefeated Louisiana Tech Tuesday.
Senior Ricky Tarrant scored a game-high 19 points – including 17 in the first half – to lead Memphis (4-2) in front of 11,114 at FedExForum. Classmate Shaq Goodwin recorded 18 points and 12 rebounds for his ninth career double-double, while Avery Woodson and Markel Crawford tallied 13 points apiece. Trahson Burrell registered a double-double of his own for the first time this season with 10 points and 11 boards in the victory.
The win marked the first time Memphis put five players in double digits since March 8, 2015 against Temple. The Tigers also collected double-doubles in the same game for the first time since the same two players accomplished the feat last Jan. 17 against UCF.
The Tigers, who never trailed in the contest, shot 48 percent (32-for-67) from the field and 44 percent (10-of-23) from 3-point. Memphis also dominated the glass, 49-32.
"[It was] a good win tonight," Memphis head coach Josh Pastner said. "I thought the guys played well wire-to-wire. … Overall this was a good effort from our young men. We were locked in and we had energy. We had talked about the three keys to the game, and we did a great job of limiting fast break points, we did a good job of taking care of the ball, and making sure we attacked the paint."
Memphis led by just three at 12-9, before rolling out a 25-4 run that pushed the margin to 24 with just over four minutes to play in the opening period to lead 37-13, as Tarrant had nine points in the run – including two three-point baskets.
The lead grew as large as 25 at 40-15 – the largest of the game at the time – on Tarrant's fourth and final three of the half. He was 4-for-6 from distance in the period, converting the Tigers' only triples in the stanza.
Memphis led, 44-27, at the half, shooting 52 percent from the field. The Tigers handed out 11 assists on their 17 baskets and claimed a 22-17 edge on the boards through the opening 20 minutes.
The Bulldogs shaved the lead to 15 at 54-39 with a quick 7-0 spurt, closing the gap with 15:36 to play, but Memphis answered as Burrell canned a three and Goodwin followed with a dunk off of a feed from Burrell to restore a 59-39 advantage at the 14:53 mark of the second half.
The Tigers were not threatened from there, expanding the lead to as many as 26 with 10 minutes remaining and cruised to the win.
Memphis finished the game with a season-high 21 assists and turned 12 offensive rebounds into 17 second-chance points.
"I thought Shaq Goodwin was excellent, I thought Markel Crawford played at a high level – a very high level. The more he plays like that, the better our team is," said Pastner. "Obviously Ricky really got us going in the first half with those threes. Overall we did a nice job. I was really proud of Trahson Burrell, and I gave him the defensive play of the game. I had been hard on him defensively. I benched him on Friday because he did not play defense, and he didn't play hard and he sat, but he came out with the right mindset tonight, and got himself a double-double. "
Louisiana Tech, which entered the game receiving votes Associated Press top 25 poll, got 18 points from Alex Hamilton, as Erik McCree chipped in with 14 points off the bench to go along with a team-best six rebounds.
Memphis returns to action Saturday, when it hosts Southeast Missouri State on CBS Sports Network at 6 p.m.
