Lawson, Goodwin Lead Memphis Past SEMO, 80-65

Freshman collects third double-double in seven games as senior tallies 20
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Freshman Dedric Lawson scored a career-high 28 points on 12-for-18 shooting and pulled down 14 rebounds to lead the Memphis men's basketball team past Southeast Missouri State 80-65 at FedExForum Saturday.
Lawson, the two-time reigning American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week, collected the third double-double of his seven-game career for the Tigers. The win, its third consecutive, improved Memphis to 5-2 on the season. The loss kept SEMO winless in seven games.
Senior Shaq Goodwin contributed 20 points and six boards to the Memphis cause, while classmate Ricky Tarrant chipped in with 15 points and 10 assists. Junior Avery Woodson added 10 points and a career-high six assists.
"I'll take the win, but there are things we have to do better," head coach Josh Pastner said. "I was not happy how we played, but we did win the game, so I'm happy about that. I loved the fact that we had 22 assists on 31 made field goals. I don't like the fact that we did not execute the game plan on limiting them to one shot – they had 13 offensive rebounds – that is inexcusable, and something we take great pride in boxing out, and we had done a good job with that over the last few games."
Memphis took just its second lead of the game using a 9-0 run over 1:47 to erase a 24-22 Southeast Missouri State advantage with 6:48 remaining in the first half. Following a Lawson layup to tie the game at 24, Woodson nailed a 3-pointer from the right wing with 5:54 to play.
A Lawson jumper and two free throws from Tarrant extended the Memphis lead to 31-24 with less than five minutes left in the half.
The Redhawks battled back to knot the game at 33-33 with 9-2 run of their own punctuated with a LaDarius Coleman tip-in with 1:10 left, but a good look from Tarrant found Goodwin for a layup on the next trip down the floor. Lawson then stripped Southeast Missouri State's Tony Anderson and Tarrant found Goodwin again for a layup with 30 seconds remaining for a 37-33 edge.
The Tigers led, 37-35, at the half. Memphis opened the second half scoring 11 of the first 17 points – including eight consecutive – to take control. Crawford took a pass from Woodson for a bucket just 11 seconds in, and Lawson tallied the next six to lengthen the lead to 43-37 with two minutes gone.
A 3-pointer from Marcus Wallace at the 9:36 mark stopped a 2-for-11 shooting stretch for the Redhawks and cut the lead to 52-51. But six quick points sandwiching a basket from Coleman by Lawson, Goodwin and Woodson opened the Tigers' advantage to 58-53 with 7:52 remaining.
Memphis cruised from there to sew up the victory.
The Tigers (31-of-64) shot 48 percent from the field and limited SEMO to 24-for-60 (40 percent) for the game. Memphis claimed a slim 38-35 edge on the glass and turned 14 turnovers into 21 points.
Wallace paced Southeast Missouri State with a team-high 16 points and Antonius Cleveland had 14.
The Tigers return to action next Saturday, hosting Manhattan at 7 p.m., on ESPN3.
