Strong Second Half Propels Memphis Past Manhattan, 89-57
Dec 12, 2015 | Men's Basketball
Lawson, Crawford pace Tigers to fourth consecutive win
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Freshman Dedric Lawson scored a game-high 21 points on 10-for-16 shooting and sophomore Markel Crawford added a career-best 16 points as the Memphis men's basketball team used an overpowering second half to run past pesky Manhattan, 89-57, Saturday at FedExForum.
Â
Seniors Trahson Burrell and Shaq Goodwin posted 13 points apiece to round out the four Tigers scoring double figures as UofM won its fourth consecutive game. With the victory, Memphis improved to 6-2 while Manhattan fell to 1-7 on the season.
Â
Memphis broke the game wide open with a 16-0 run in the second half, holding Manhattan scoreless for over five minutes in the period to remove any question of the outcome after the Jaspers had hung around in the opening 20 minutes. The Tigers missed just seven shots from the field in the second half, going 20-for-27 to finish the night 58.9 percent (33-of-56).
Â
Memphis erased a two-point halftime deficit, opening the second half with an 11-2 run over the first 5:15 to take a lead it would not relinquish. Markel Crawford knotted the game at 38 on the first possession of the half before a free throw from Goodwin and layup by Lawson gave the Tigers a 41-38 lead with 18:11 to play. The lead stretched to five with a Goodwin dunk off of a feed from Lawson prior to the first media timeout of the period.
Â
The Tigers' first double-digit lead of the night came when Ricky Tarrant stripped Manhattan's Thomas Capuano and Crawford found Burrell for a bucket and a 54-43 lead with 11:33 remaining that prompted a Jaspers timeout.
Â
Memphis began the game 0-for-6 from the field, allowing the Jaspers to take a 10-4 lead at the five-minute mark. Burrell jumpstarted the offense, hitting a baseline jumper and taking contact for a three-point play to make it 10-7. Manhattan, though, kept the pressure on, growing the lead to as many as eight with 13:01 remaining the half on a Zane Waterman three for a 17-9 advantage.
Â
Down, 21-14, with less than 12 minutes left before the break, the Tigers caught fire, converting six consecutive shots, and used a 9-0 run over two minutes to take their first lead of the game. Lawson scored the first five points in the stretch, including a three-point play which got the Tigers to within 21-19 before a Tarrant jumper tied things at the 10:59 mark. He followed with a pair of free throws for the lead, which was reclaimed by Manhattan on a Rashawn Stores 3-pointer on the next possession.
Â
The Tigers' defense forced the Jaspers to miss five straight attempts from the floor as Lawson took over to give Memphis a cushion to play with. He tallied the next four points in an 11-1 Tigers run over a four-and-a-half minute span for the Tigers' largest lead of the half. Goodwin finished the spurt with a layup that pushed the Memphis edge to 34-25 with 4:34 to play before intermission.
Â
Manhattan battled back as Shane Richards nailed two threes within one minute of each other late in the period to hand the Jaspers a 38-36 edge heading into the locker room.
Â
The Tigers dominated in the paint, 52-20, for the game and also recorded 18 points off of 15 turnovers.
Â
Richards paced the Jaspers with 17 points and eight rebounds, while Rich Williams pitched in with 15 off the bench.
Memphis returns to action Tuesday, hosting Southern at 7 p.m., on ESPN3.
