Memphis Bench Propels Tigers to Five-Point Win
Dec 15, 2015 | Men's Basketball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis bench, led by K.J. Lawson's 16 points and Trahson Burrell's 15, helped pace the Tigers to a 72-67 win over Southern University on Tuesday evening at FedExForum.
Lawson's total was a career high, while Burell scored a season-high point total in the win. Dedric Lawson recorded his third collegiate double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while also leading the team with four blocked shots. Ricky Tarrant Jr. was the fourth and final Tiger player to reach double figures in the scoring column with 11 points, four assists, and a game-high four steals.
"We found a way to win – it wasn't pretty," said Memphis head coach Josh Pastner. "We won tonight strictly because we got some stops defensively. They came in shooting 41 percent from three's, and were 27 percent tonight and 37 percent from the field. The issue was we had 19 turnovers, which is uncharacteristic for us. We had some sloppy turnovers."
The Tigers (7-2) came out sluggish to start the game, and the visitors led by as many as eight points, five and a half minutes into the contest; however, Memphis quickly responded with an 11-0 run to push ahead to a 16-13 lead three minutes later. After Southern (7-3) pushed back to a one-point lead with 9:09 to play in the opening stanza, Memphis ran off a 10-2 run, capped by a fastbreak lay-in by Burrell, staking the Tigers to their largest lead of the game at seven. The pesky Jaguar squad would not back down, using a 10-3 run over the period's final five and a half minutes to send the teams knotted at 29 into the locker room at halftime.
The back-and-forth second half featured eight tie scores and seven lead changes, with the last lead change coming with five and a half minutes remaining on a K.J. Lawson jumper that kicked off a 6-0 Memphis run, giving the hosts a lead that they would not relinquish for the remainder of the game.
Leading by six points with a minute and a half left in the game, Memphis saw Southern score five straight points to close the gap to one; however, a driving lay-in by K.J. Lawson and a pair of free throws by Tarrant Jr. sealed the fate for the Tigers in the five-point victory.
Memphis made 52 percent of its shots (13-of-25) in the second half, and 38.9 percent (21-of-54) for the game, while attempting just eight three-point baskets, making two. Southern went 25-of-68 from the field (36.8 percent) and just 5-of-18 (27.8 percent) from beyond the arc. The big difference came at the free throw line where Memphis went to the charity stripe 42 times, making 28, while Southern was 12-of-16 at the stripe.
The Tigers return to action on Friday, December 18, when the team hosts the Ole Miss Rebels in a 7 p.m. tip-off at FedExForum, on a game broadcast on ESPNews.
