Second-Half Rally Falls Short Against Ole Miss
Dec 18, 2015 | Men's Basketball
Tarrant posts season-high 29; Lawson has fifth double-double
MEMPHIS, Tenn. ā Senior guard Ricky Tarrant poured in a season-high 29 points on 8-for-14 shooting, and freshman forward Dedric Lawson secured his fifth double-double in 10 games, but Memphis fell, 85-79, to Ole Miss Friday.
Ā
Trailing by double figures for much of the night, the Tigers (7-3) used a late run to get as close as five points with less than two minutes remaining, as the Rebels (9-2) handed the hosts their first defeat in six games while extending their own winning streak to six consecutive games in front of 14,529 at FedExForum.
Ā
Lawson tallied 21 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks for the Tigers, who outscored Ole Miss by six Ā in the second half despite coming up short.
Ā
"I want to give full credit to Ole Miss," Memphis head coach Josh Pastner said. "I thought they played great ā especially in the first half ā they were terrific. You have to give coach [Andy] Kennedy and his team a tremendous amount of credit. They punched us right in the mouth in the first half, and we didn't match their physicality. In the second half we played ā we competed, we played hard ā and I felt we punched them in the mouth. We did a lot of good things. The issue, though, is the reoccurring theme is our start. It is on me to make the change, and we are going to change things up because it has just been a reoccurring issue with the way we were starting. Those guys can't say that they don't know ā that they've been in and out of the lineup ā because we have used the same group since LeMoyne-Owen. Our starts have not been good. We are going to have to change some things because that has been our biggest issue."
Ā
Down, 72-58, with 5:12 remaining, Memphis ran off six straight points, keyed by a Tarrant three and Lawson layup to slice the lead to just eight ā 72-64 ā with 3:44 left and prompt an Ole Miss timeout. Following a pair of Ole Miss free throws, Markel Crawford hit one from the line himself and Tarrant had another bucket to cut it to 74-68 with 2:30 left. The Rebels' Anthony Perez countered with a layup before Tarrant hit a 3-point to pull the Tigers to within 76-71 with 1:57 to remaining.
Ā
That was as close as the Tigers got, though, as Ole Miss converted nine free throws down the stretch to earn the victory.
Ā
The Tigers shot 35 percent from the field, making 22 of their 63 attempts for the game, including eight from 3-point range. Ole Miss was 44 percent (27-of-62) from the floor. Memphis held a 44-42 edge on the boards and tallied 23 fastbreak points for the game.
Ā
The Tigers scored five of the first seven points of the second half to cut the lead to single digits at 45-36 for the first time since 15-7. Lawson knocked down a 3-pointer from Crawford, who then had a basket of his own, assisted by Tarrant, one minute into the final period. But, again, the Rebels fought back, extending the advantage to 16 as Tomasz Gielo hit a three to make it 53-37 with 3:42 gone in the half.
Ā
It looked as though the Rebels would coast to the win, holding a double-digit advantage until the last media timeout of the night prior to the Tigers' final rally.
Ā
After Goodwin tied the game with a layup, 5-5, at the 18:28 mark, Memphis went cold from the field, missing its next 12 shots to allow the Rebels to get out to an early 26-11 advantage. The Tigers' only points in the stretch were free throws from Tarrant and Lawson. Tarrant broke the cold spell with a 3-pointer with 8:21 remaining the half that made it 26-14.
Ā
Tarrant cut the lead to 28-18 with a with 6:55 to play with a steal and layup, but the Rebels rattled off 14 of the next 20 points to restore a comfortable margin, leading 42-24 with less than three minutes before halftime.
Ā
The Tigers trailed at the half, 43-31, despite Avery Woodson nailing a three at the horn.
