DALLAS (AP) - Markus Kennedy scored 21 points on 10-of-13 shooting to lead Southern Methodist to a 73-59 victory over Memphis on Thursday night.
SMU (11-4, 2-1 American Athletic Conference) bounced back after having its eight-game winning streak snapped by Cincinnati, 56-50 on Jan. 3.
Austin Nichols scored 11 points and D'Marnier Cunningham netted a season-high 10 points to lead Memphis (8-6, 1-2).
Yanick Moreira had 15 points, and Ben Moore and Keith Frazier each chipped in 12 points for the Mustangs, who shot 27 of 52 from the field for 51.9 percent and outrebounded the Tigers 38-22. Nic Moore added eight points and eight assists for the Mustangs.
SMU had a 34-21 halftime advantage, and Frazier's layup with 9:14 to play stretched the Mustangs' lead to 53-42, and they led by double digits the rest of the way.
With the loss, Memphis lost back-to-back game for the first time since near the start of the 2012-13 season. The last time the Tigers dropped consecutive games was to VCU and Minnesota at the Battle 4 Atlantis (Nov. 22-23, 2012) - a stretch of 80 games ago.
Memphis continues its Texas road trip Sunday, Jan. 11 when it heads to Houston to face the Cougars. Game time is 3 p.m. (CT) from Hofheinz Pavilion. CBS Sports Network will televise the contest.
