DURHAM, N.C. - Memphis' 54th-ranked women's tennis team saw its upset bid fall short when it dropped a 4-0 decision to No. 4 Duke on Sunday afternoon at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Club in Durham, N.C. The Lady Tigers suffered their first setback on the season and move to 2-1 while the Blue Devils improve to 3-0 and advance to the ITA National Indoor Championships.
"We got better today," Head Coach Hayden Perez said. "The girls competed in a manner that made me very proud to be a Tiger and they represented the University well. We were very close to winning the doubles point and continued to fight throughout the day. I can't wait to see where this team goes from here."
For the second-straight match, the Lady Tigers were unable to capture the doubles point despite a victory at the No. 1 doubles line. Memphis' tandem of Anki Wind and Alyssa Hibberd downed Beatric Capra and Samantha Harris, 7-5, but losses at the No. 2 and 3 lines gave the Blue Devils the early edge. Annie Mulholland and Rachel Kahan upended Kathryn Hughes and Tara McElroy, 6-2, at the No. 3 line while Marta Morga and Liza Tymchenko fell to Ester Goldfeld and Alyssa Smith, 6-4, at the No. 2 line.
The Tigers were unable to turn the tides in singles as Duke won four-of-five first sets. Hibberd was unable to upset 55th-ranked Harris, 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 4 line to give the Blue Devils a 2-0 lead. Duke pushed ahead 3-0 as Mulholland defeated McElroy, 6-0, 6-2, at the No. 6 line. The Blue Devils clinched the match as 87th-ranked Goldfeld fought off Tymchenko, 6-3, 6-1, at the No. 2 line.
The Lady Tigers will be in action again on Saturday, Jan. 31, when they travel to Nashville to take on No. 12 Vanderbilt. First serve against the Commodores is slated for 2 p.m. Visit GoTigersGo.com and follow @UofMTennis on Twitter for all the latest news on the women's tennis team.
