NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Belmont hit four home runs and defeated Memphis 12-5 on Tuesday at E. S. Rose Park in Nashville.
The Tigers (12-4) did some two out damage in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Jake Little slapped a single through the right side with two outs and Tucker Tubbs ripped a two-run home run to left field to make it 2-0. The home run was the first of the season for Tubbs and the fourth for the Tigers as the first baseman earned RBI number seven and eight with the swing.
Memphis added a run in the second, but finished the frame with the bases stranded full. Nate Rupiper led it off with a single and Kane Barrow drew a walk. Keaton Aldridge advanced the runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt before Ethan Gross’ RBI single brought home a run. After Gross stole second, Darien Tubbs attempted the squeeze bunt, but Barrow was out at the plate on the fielder’s choice. A walk to Willis loaded the bases, but Belmont escaped further damage.
Belmont (7-9) tallied one run in the second on a solo home run, but three runs in the third gave the Bruins a 4-3 lead. A one-out walk came back to hurt as a two-out triple scored one run. A two-out blast to centerfield flew over the fence for a two-run home run as Belmont took the 4-3 lead.
The Tigers scratched across one run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Barrow, but the Bruins answered with four runs in the sixth to open a 9-4 advantage. The Bruins scored four run on four hits and a second home run by Nick Elgi provided two of the four runs.
Barrow recorded his second RBI of the game with his second sacrifice fly as the Tigers got one run back in the eighth. Tucker Tubbs singled and Drew Griffin followed with a single to put the first two men on in the inning. Rupiper reached on a fielder’s choice, but Belmont forced out Griffin at second. Barrow hit the sacrifice fly to right-centerfield to score Tubbs from third, but the Tigers couldn’t add anything else.
The Bruins answered the Tigers score with their third big inning of the game to take the 12-5 lead. A walk and single put two on and a double brought in both runs. After another walk, a single brought in the third tally, but Belmont stranded the bases full to end the frame.
Tucker Tubbs, Griffin and Rupiper paced the Tigers offense with two hit days, while Barrow and Tubbs finished with two RBI.
The Tigers continue a four-game road trip with a three-game series at Saint Louis. The series begins on Friday at 3 p.m. at T.R. Hughes Ballpark in O’Fallon, Mo.
