MEMPHIS, Tenn.-- The Memphis men's tennis team sits at No. 58 in team rankings, according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association polls released Tuesday, marking the first time the team has cracked the ITA top 75 since 2006.
Memphis netters have since captured national rankings in singles and doubles, freshmen Joe Salisbury and David O'Hare were the latest at No. 52 in the doubles polls released Jan. 4, but this is the highest team ranking since the Blue and Gray were ranked 74th in 2006.
"It's a big jump from where we were," head coach Paul Goebel said. "They've all trained so hard and it showed this past weekend in our match against Oklahoma State."
The Tigers (1-1, 0-1) fell to 35th-ranked Tulsa in their season opener, but bounced back to defeat, then 47th-ranked, OSU in a 5-2 decision in their last dual match.
"It's still so early in the season and we have a long way to go," Coach Goebel said. "But I'm definitely proud of these guys."
The next ITA rankings are slated to be released Feb. 3. The Tigers are back on the court this Friday, Jan. 28, in their first home match of the 2011 season against Tennessee Tech at 6 p.m. at The Racquet Club of Memphis.
