Nerdal and Jackson Bring Home Gold Medals In Final Day of Competition At C-USA Outdoor Championships

ORLANDO, Fla. - After a brief rain delay at the UCF Track and Soccer Complex on Sunday night, the University of Memphis track and field squads wrapped up competition at the 2010 Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championship with the men's squad finishing in sixth place with 95 points while the women's team finished 12th with 13.83 points.
Senior thrower Steffen Nerdal claimed his eighth C-USA individual crown with a personal-record throw of 55.47m (182-00) to finish first. The Norwegian claimed his fifth C-USA Performance of the Meet honors this weekend with first place finishes in the hammer and discus throws.
After claiming a bronze medal in the shot put on Saturday night, senior thrower Seth Major returned to the podium with a second place finish in the discus throw. Major finished with a mark of 50.16m (164-07) to claim his fourth C-USA medal.
A photo finish commenced in the men's 110m hurdles and sophomore hurdler Robert Jackson was the beneficiary with a personal-record time of 13.71 seconds to claim his first gold medal finish in C-USA action. With that time, Jackson improves to a tie for 10th in the NCAA Division I rankings and sits in fourth in the NCAA East Region.
Junior sprinter Richard Lowe also medaled with a second place finish in the 400m hurdles. Lowe broke his own school record with a time of 51.13 seconds. The Kansas City, Mo., native is ranked 31st in the nation in the event and 11th in the NCAA East Region and advances to the NCAA East Regional meet in two weeks.
Sophomore Alex Sweet earned All-C-USA accolades with a sixth place time of 53.75 seconds in the 400m hurdles. In the 800m run, freshman Abdi Guleed earned his second All-C-USA honor with a fourth place time of 1:53.38. Junior Guy Hudson also earned All-C-USA status, crossing the finish line in seventh place with a time of 1:53.98. Freshman distance runner Brieuc Vandeleene crossed the finish line in 3:55.47 seconds to earn fifth place in the race and his third All-C-USA honor.
The Tigers 4x400m relay team that consisted of Sweet, Nick Harold, Hudson and Lowe took home the bronze medal with a time of 3:13.31 seconds.
In other field event action on Sunday evening, sophomore pole vaulter Karlis Pujats earned his second All-C-USA performance with a fourth place vault of 4.80m (15-09.00). Junior jumper Jerome Leslie finished fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 14.73m (48-04.00) to earn his second All-C-USA performance of the meet.
The Lady Tigers 4x400m relay team consisting of juniors, LaShundra Kershaw and Holland Thomas, sophomore Keyona Neal and freshman Quaniqua Jones capped off the 2010 C-USA outdoor season Sunday night under the lights at the UCF Track and Soccer Complex with a school-record breaking time of 3:47.59.
Thomas and Neal earned individual All C-USA honors in the 400m hurdles (1:01.49) and the 400m dash (55.89), respectively.
Freshman high jumper Kirsten Berding earned her first All-C-USA honors by setting a new personal-best mark of 1.64m (5-04.50).
Eight Tigers advance to the NCAA East Regional slated to begin on May 28 in Greensboro, N.C. Robert Jackson (110m hurdles), Richard Lowe (400m hurdles), Steffen Nerdal (hammer and discus throws), Seth Major (discus), Karlis Pujats (pole vault), Knut Syversen (hammer throw), Jerome Leslie (high jump) and LaShundra Kershaw (100m and 200m dash) are currently qualified to advance. Select Tiger throwers will travel to Tucson, Ariz., for the Tucson Elite Throwers Classic.
