Tulane built a 3-0 lead Friday night before the game was suspended in the fourth inning. Memphis falls to 17-21 overall and 6-7 in C-USA action. Tulane improves to 25-14, 6-4 in C-USA.
The two teams combined for seven home runs in the six-inning completion. Tulane scored in just two of the final six innings, but hit five homers--two in the fourth and three in the seventh.
Two batters into the restart, Tulane made it 6-0 on the strength of a three-run home run by DH Gunner Wright. Marc Ashley, who came on in relief of starter Brennon Martin, then issued two-out walks to Bullosa and Matt Ryan. Blake Crohan put the contest out of reach with the Green Wave's second three-run blast of the inning to make it 9-0.
Adam McClain got the Tigers on the scoreboard with a towering drive over the wall in deep right centerfield.
Memphis continued to chip away at the Green Wave lead in the home half of the sixth. Tyler Huelsing, who led the Tigers offense with three hits, led off the inning with a double and Trey Wiedman quickly made it 9-3 with a two-run homer to left centerfield. Wiedman's blast was his seventh of the year. The senior finished the game with two RBI.
The Green Wave regained its nine-run cushion with three more solo home runs in the top of the seventh. Rob Segedin drove a no-doubter into the trees beyond the leftfield wall. Garrett Cannizaro and Quinn Pippin then teamed up for back-to-back homers to make it 12-3. Bullosa's RBI-triple made it a 10-run contest.
Consecutive singles by Drew Martinez, Jacob Wilson and Huelsing gave the Tigers a run in the seventh. Huelsing's RBI single scored Martinez and moved into sole possession of 10th place on Memphis' all-time RBI list.
Memphis capped the tilt's scoring with a single score in the seventh. Pinch hitter John Jordan and Phillip Chapman got the rally started with consecutive doubles. McClain was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Jordan scored on a passed ball for the 13-5 final.
Tulane led the tilt 3-0, with all three runs coming in the third inning. Nick Bullosa led off the inning with a single and Brandon Boudreaux followed with a double. Matt Ryan grounded and two-run single up the middle to get the Wave on the board, 2-0. Rob Segedin then drove Ryan home with a sacrifice fly.
Green Wave starter Conrad Flynn baffled the Tigers offense to the tune of five strikeouts. He gave up two hits--singles by Martinez and Huelsing. Flynn earned the no-decision, while Green Wave reliever Drew Zizinia picked the win. Zizinia struck out five in 4.2 innings. Tulane pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts in the game.
Martin was the loser for the Tigers. He allowed four runs on five hits in the three innings. Ashley surrendered five runs on three hits in an inning of relief. Jonathan Jones was tagged for four runs in 2.2 innings. Ben Paullus and Worth Tate closed out the game and held Tulane scoreless over the final 2.1 innings.
The Tigers and Green Wave will wrap up the season series with a doubleheader on Sunday. Game one is set for 12 p.m. with the finale to follow. The Tigers will honor batboy Stan Bronson in a pre-game ceremony.
