Arkansas State scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 6-5 lead and held on to defeat Memphis by that score in non-conference action Tuesday night at Tomlinson Stadium. The Tigers falls to 11-14, while the Red Wolves improve to 16-9.
Rick Russell led the Memphis offense with two hits and two RBI. The Tigers were held to just five hits on the night. Drew Martinez and Chad Zurcher were both held hitless, snapping hit streaks of 13 and 16 games, respectively.
Arkansas State got on the board first, with two runs in the first. Todd Baumgartner's double followed by an RBI-groundout plated Giovanni Garcia and Jordan Castaldo.
Memphis answered with a run of its own in the second. Adam McClain and Trey Wiedman punched consecutive singles up the middle. Phillip Chapman brought McClain home with a sac fly to left.
The Red Wolves crossed two more runs in the third to make it 4-1, before the Tigers clawed for a run in the fourth and three in the fifth to claim a 5-4 advantage. Russell scored in the fourth after legging out a triple. He then fueled the three-run fifth with a two-run single.
But Memphis could not hold the lead. With two outs in the home half of the sixth, Garcia belted a two-run double to leftfield to put the Red Wolves on top for good.
Dane Sharp was charged with the loss after giving up the two sixth-inning scores. The Bartlett, Tenn., native allowed two hits in 2.2 innings.
The Tigers will now prepare to hit the road for the first time in C-USA play, when they head to West Virginia for a three-game weekend versus Marshall. The Tigers and Thundering Herd will play a single game on Fri., Apr. 2 at 6:30 p.m. Due to the Easter weekend, the two clubs will battle it out for the series win in doubleheader action on Sat., Apr. 3. First pitch on Saturday is slated for 10:30 p.m. CST.
