Dallas Baptist's offense scored runs in just three innings. However, the Patriots crossed four runs each in two of those three innings to defeat Memphis, 9-4, in the series opener on Friday afternoon.
The Tigers fall to 4-9 on the year with their third-straight loss. Dallas Baptist improves to 8-5.
Memphis got on the board first, in the third inning, after Drew Martinez reached on an infield single and stole second. After moving to third on a groundout by Chad Zurcher, he scored on a fielder's choice grounder by Jacob Wilson.
DBU took a 4-1 lead with the first of its two four-run innings. Nine-hole hitter Austin Knight and leadoff hitter Ryan Enos connected for singles. Tyler Robbins then chopped an RBI-single up the middle and Jason Krizan followed with a run-scoring groundball to first to give the Patriots a 2-1 advantage. Designated hitter Austin Elkins dealt the Tigers the big blow when he belted a two-run double into the leftfield corner.
From there the Tigers battled back for single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to cut the deficit to one run. Memphis got solo home runs from Trey Wiedman and Tyler Huelsing in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively to make it 4-3.
Just as Memphis made it a tight game, DBU answered with its second four-run frame. A groundball RBI by Ryan Behmanesh made it 5-3, but the crushing hit came from Ryan Thompson. The Patriot's rightfielder blasted a two-out, three-run home run to right field to make it a five-run contest.
The Tigers refused to go away and after drawing a leadoff walk, Wiedman came in on an RBI-single by Martinez to cut the deficiency to 8-4.
Memphis starter Brennon Martin was the losing pitcher. The southpaw fell to 0-2 on the year after giving up nine runs on 11 hits in the six innings. He managed just two strikeouts. Dane Sharp was effective in two innings of relief. He held DBU scoreless and struck out the side in the eighth.
Brandon Williamson was the winning hurler for Dallas Baptist. The righthander gave up four runs on eight hits in six innings. Duncan McAlpine picked up the save after striking out three and no-hitting the Tigers through the final three innings of play.
Dallas Baptist posted a 14-8 advantage over Memphis in the hits column. The Tigers got two hits from Martinez and Wiedman. Wiedman also scored twice.
The U of M and DBU will wrap up the three-game series with a doubleheader on Sat., Mar. 13. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 12 p.m. Game two is tentatively set for 3 p.m.
