Toledo's Two-Run Ninth Downs Tigers, 8-6

Memphis crossed four runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 6-6, but Toledo put up a two-run ninth inning to send the Tigers to an 8-6 loss Friday night at the 2010 USA College Classic hosted by Millington's USA Stadium.
Memphis, who falls to 1-3 with the loss, stared a four-run deficit going into the bottom of the seventh inning. Junior catcher Phillip Chapman ignited a four-run rally with a double down the leftfield line. He advanced to third on a groundout by Derrick Thomas. After a walk by Drew Martinez, shortstop Chad Zurcher punched an RBI-single through the right side to score Chapman to make it a 6-3 contest. Memphis. With two outs and two on, the Tigers benefitted from a costly Toledo error. Trey Wiedman lifted a high fly ball to shallow leftcenter field. The Toledo defense was unable to come up with the play, allowing Martinez and McClain to score to make it a one-run affair. Jacob Wilson knotted the tilt at six on an RBI-single through the left side.
With the game tied at 6-all, Toledo got an RBI by pinch hitter Jeff Cola. Jim Vahalik then worked a bases loaded walk for the 8-6 final.
Toledo starter Kyle Shaw was solid in his season debut. He limited Memphis to two runs on six hits, but did not get help from relief middle pitching to earn a no decision. Matt Suschak was the beneficiary of the two-run ninth as he tossed 1.1 scoreless innings to pick up the win. Closer Matt Zahel earned the save.
Memphis got a gutsy effort from Brennon Martin. The southpaw was touched for eight hits, but fanned nine in seven innings. Dane Sharp was the losing pitcher after giving up two scores in 1.1 innings.
Led by Zurcher's three hits, Memphis collected 10 hits on the night. Wilson posted multiple hits, going 2-for-3.
The Tigers will look to right the ship on Saturday, when they take on Pitt. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at USA Stadium.
