MEMPHIS, Tenn. -
Head coach Daron Schoenrock and the University of Memphis baseball team officially opened team fall practices this week and the sixth-year skipper is pleased with his team's first week on the field.
"The guys were excited to get on the field after a week of individual workouts," said Schoenrock. "For the coaches it was good to see the team together. The first day was a typical first practice. The veterans knew what to do and where to go, while the new players made the big adjustment to the new setting."
Schoenrock returns 19 letterwinners, including six of its top seven hitters and six starting position players. The core group of returning Tigers is led by Drew Martinez, who was drafted by the New York Mets in the 23rd round of the MLB First-Year Player Draft in June, and Chad Zurcher, Memphis's first .400 hitter since Mark Little in 1994. In addition, the Tigers welcome one of the nation's top recruiting classes.
The Tigers will engage in a series of intersquad scrimmages throughout the 26-practice, fall session that runs through Sun., Nov. 7. The club will also play several mini scrimmages during midweek practices. All practices are open to the public.
