MEMPHIS, Tenn.--The Lady Tigers are headed to Knoxville, Tenn., to continue their fall slate at the 2010 USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships, hosted by the University of Tennessee.
Memphis will have three representatives in the main singles draw, which begins on Thursday, in sophomores Courtney Collins and Kelly Gray and freshman Stefanie Mikesz. Draw champions at regionals earn the right to participate in the National Indoor Championships in New Haven, Ct., Nov. 5-8.
"The best we have done in the past is making the round of 16 of singles and semifinals of doubles," Head Coach Lee Taylor Walker said.
Collins last competed at the 2010 ITA All-American Championships, where she was edged out by Lilly Kimbell (Georgia), 5-7, 7-5, 6-4.
Collins and Mikesz will also compete at regionals in the main doubles draw against a qualifier. In their last outing, the tandem, now with a 1-2 record as a pair, found themselves up 5-0 and 6-3 during the match against Chelcie Abajian and Breanne Smutko (Illinois), but couldn't pull out the win, falling by a score of 9-7.
"Stefanie and Courtney saw the best players in the country last week and should be very comfortable with the environment," Coach Walker said. "They have learned from their mistakes and hopefully it will pay off for them."
Main draw play for singles and doubles will begin Thursday. The round of 32 for doubles will begin at 8 a.m., and the round of 64 singles will begin at 11 a.m.
