Rice Flies Past Memphis, 3-0

Rice (9-3; 1-0 C-USA) 25 25 25 Memphis (2-13; 0-2 C-USA) 16 22 23Altrese Hawkins and Carolyn Baker both downed 10 kills, but it was not enough for Memphis in a straight-set loss to Rice in C-USA action on Friday night at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. The loss was the sixth-straight for the Tigers, who fall to 2-13 overall and 0-2 in league play.
Libero Becky Shaffer picked up a match-best 19 digs and Katlin Inglish added 11 digs for the Tigers.
Rice, who played its first match since September 12, posted a plus-15 advantage in kills (49-34) and assists (46-31), while out-digging the U of M 57-52.
The Owls were paced by Meredith Schamun, who dished out a match-high 38 assists. Ashleigh McCord led the Rice offense with a match-best 12 kills and 11 digs in a double-double effort. Jenn McClean also posted a double-double with 10 kills and 14 digs. Jessie Boulavsky both connected for 10 kills and hit .500. Libero Tracey Lam picked up 12 digs for Rice.
Memphis will continue the search for its first home win of the year on Saturday when it hosts Houston. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
