DALLAS, Texas - The University of Memphis women's tennis team dropped two matches yesterday in Texas, losing, 6-1, to UT-Arlington and, 7-0, to conference-foe SMU. With the losses, Memphis moves to 4-3 on the 2009 dual season. The Lady Tigers are now 1-1 in Conference USA play, with a loss to SMU and a defeat of UAB.
Memphis' first match of the day came against the Mavs of UT-Arlington. UTA had victories over Arkansas-Little Rock and Arkansas State coming into Friday's match.
To begin the day in doubles play, the Lady Tigers took the No. 1 doubles competition with Ashley Murdock and Sarah Irvin upending Nikola Matovivoa and Ayram Edery, 8-6. With the win, Murdock and Irvin remain undefeated since pairing up five matches ago.
At the No. 3 slot, Monika Hadvigerova and Katarina Mlcochova defeated Amanda Brown and Lindsey Wiseman, 8-3.
The recipient of the doubles point hinged on the outcome of the No. 2 doubles match between Marjorie Ondeck and Robyn Jones and Daiana Negreanu and Maria Martinez-Romer. The match was forced into a tiebreaker with each team winning eight games apiece. UT-Arlington took the doubles match and the doubles point, taking an early 1-0 lead over the Lady Tigers.
In singles, the only U of M player to come away with a victory was Murdock, an All-C-USA performer last season. Murdock improves her record to 6-3 so far this year with her defeat of Negreanu, 6-0, 6-4. Memphis also had a chance to take the No. 6 singles win. Brown, a junior from Whitby, Ontario, suffered a first set loss to Edery, 6-2, before bouncing back for a 7-5 second set triumph. However, Edery took the match by winning the third-set tiebreaker, 10-8.
In the Lady Tigers' second match of the day, the SMU Mustangs took an early 1-0 lead by sweeping the doubles matches. Murdock and Irvin suffered their first loss of the season, losing 8-4 to Natalia Bubien and Ravi Fracis at the No. 1 doubles position. At the No. 2 slot, Kristen Reid and Monica Neveklovska upended Marjorie Ondeck and Robyn Jones, 8-5. Lindsey Wiseman and Amanda Brown also lost their doubles match.
In singles play, the U of M had two opportunities to come away with victories over their opponents from Dallas. At the No. 2 position, Murdock looked to improve to 7-3 on the season, but came up short. She lost the first set in a tiebreaker to SMU's Francis, 7-6(3). Murdock came back to win the second set, 4-6. In a third-set tiebreaker, Francis upended Murdock, 10-6. At the No. 5 spot, Memphis' Jones, a freshman from Baton Rouge, La., dropped the first set, 6-0, to Neveklovska. In the second set, Jones forced a tiebreker, but lost to Neveklovska, 9-7.
Memphis will face Stephen F. Austin tomorrow at 10 a.m.
