Lady Tiger Tennis Grabs Victory Over Stephen F. Austin

DALLAS, Texas - The Memphis women's tennis team (5-3) secured a 6-1 victory over the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks (0-4) on Sunday afternoon at the Turpin Tennis Center on the campus of SMU in Dallas, Texas. The Lady Tigers were looking to get back on track after falling to SMU and UT-Arlington on Friday. The 2009 U of M women's tennis team has posted the best start of any Tiger tennis team since 2002-03.
"It was a really a good win for us," said Memphis head coach Lee Taylor Walker. "We played really hard today. It is just good for us from a team standpoint to be able to bounce back from Friday's losses and pick up an important victory. It is nice to see our girls continue to improve in each of their matches."
To open the day's play, Memphis took all three doubles matches from Stephen F. Austin. At the No. 1 position, Ashley Murdock and Sarah Irvin improved to 6-1 this season with the win over Roxana Enica and Alina Shazhko.
At the No. 2 position, Marjorie Ondeck and Robyn Jones upended Gabriela Gadeva and Tatiana Smolnikova, 8-2. Ondeck and Jones evened up their record to 3-3 with the victory.
In No. 3 doubles, Dara Toulch and Kristin Chamberlain defeated Mary Harrison and Sanjana Kapur, 8 -3. Chamberlain and Toulch move their 2009 mark to 3-4.
In singles play, Murdock, a junior from Memphis, Tenn., upended R. Enica, 6-2, 7-5. Murdock is 6-4 in her second season in a U of M uniform. The St. Agnes Academy graduate spent her first season-and-a-half of collegiate tennis as a member of the LSU squad.
At No. 2 singles, Ondeck, a junior from Monroe, Ct., suffered her fifth loss of the season to Shazhko. Ondeck also has five wins this season. Earlier this season she played a very competive match with Georgia's Yvette Hyndman. Ondeck was victorious in the first set, but ultimately lost the match in three sets. Hyndman was ranked the 100th-best singles player at the time. Her Georgia team was rated as No. 6 in the country.
In the No. 3 slot, Irvin, one of two freshman on Coach Walker's squad, defeated Kapur, 6-2, 6-2. Irvin is 5-4 in singles play in her first year on the squad. She oringally hails from Queensland, Australia.
At No. 4 singles, Lindsey Wiseman was victorious over Gadeva. Gadeva took the first set from Wiseman, a sophomore from Memphis, Tenn., 6-4. Wiseman went on to take the next two sets from Gadeva securing a victory for herself. Wiseman has posted a mark of 3-1 in singles so far this year.
At No. 5 singles, Jones, the other freshman on Coach Walker's squad, squashed any opportunity that her opponent, Smolnikova, had at taking the match in the third set. Jones won the first set, 6-4, before Smolnikova picked up the victory in the second set. Jones won the third set, 6-3.
At No. 6 singles, Amanda Brown upended Andreea Enica, 6-1, 6-2. Brown is 3-5 in singles in 2009. She is originally from Whitby, Ontario.
The Lady Tigers will return to the courts on Thur., Feb. 19, for a dual with Mississippi State.
