Hawkins Downs 19 Kills, Volleyball Falls at Marshall in Four

Altrese led all players with 19 kills, but the Marshall offense overpowered Memphis in a 3-1 setback in C-USA action on Sunday afternoon.
The Tigers fall to 7-23, 3-12 in the league, while the Herd improves to 21-7 overall and 9-5 in C-USA. The loss was the fifth in five matches at Marshall for Memphis.
Senior outside hitter Lauren Thompson downed 10 kills and Marija Jovanovic added nine. Christine Bach set 43 assists for the Memphis offense that hit .256 in the contest.
Jovanovic was also effective on the defensive end, picking up nine digs and making four total blocks. Becky Shaffer made a club-best 13 digs.
Marshall hit .328 in the match and got a double-figure kills from three players. Elizabeth Herman led the way with 18 kills and a .467 attack percentage. Emily Sullivan downed 12 kills and made six total blocks. Kristin Marcum posted a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs. Setter Elizabeth Fleming handed out a match-high 45 assists.
Memphis will wrap up the 2009 season on Sat., Nov. 14, when it makes the trip to Birmingham, Ala., to take on the UAB Blazers.
