SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Senior Jenna Kubesch tossed a two-hit shutout as the University of Memphis softball team blanked Loyola Marymount, 3-0, in the USD Tournament on Saturday night. The Lady Tigers (12-7) split the second day of the tournament hosted by the University of San Diego, falling 4-2 to Cal State Northridge earlier in the day.
Kubesch pitched all seven innings to record her second shutout of the season and eighth win. The Weimar, Texas, native struck out three and never allowed a runner to reach second.
Senior first baseman Kara Ross belted a towering two-run home run to right field in the sixth inning to give Memphis a comfortable lead late in the game. The home run is the second of the season for Ross, who leads the team with 14 RBI. Junior Lindsay Kelso also scored on the long ball after singling. The hit extended Kelso's streak to a team season high seven games.
San Diego area native Kimmi Hayden scored the game-winner for the Lady Tigers in the fifth inning. The sophomore catcher led off the inning with a long fly ball that the centerfielder dropped, putting Hayden on second. Hayden then stole third and scored after an errant throw by the catcher.
Against Cal State Northridge, Memphis took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, but failed to put more runs on the board. Senior Bridgette McNulty led the team with a 2-for-3 performance and had an RBI double in the first inning.
The Lady Tigers scored its two runs on three-straight hits. With two outs, Kelso started the drive with an infield single. Back-to-back RBI doubles by McNulty and Ross gave the Lady Tigers its two-run lead.
Cal State Northridge scored an unearned run in the top of the third and then tied the game in the fifth. The Matadors then scored two runs in the top of the sixth to complete its comeback victory.
The Lady Tigers will conclude the USD Tournament on Sunday against San Diego at 10 a.m. (PST) and UC Riverside at 2:30 p.m.
