EL PASO, Texas. - The University of Memphis softball team collected eight hits but stranded nine runners in a 8-2 loss to UTEP in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday at Helen of Troy Field. The loss evens the series with the Miners as the Lady Tigers move to 17-8 and 1-1 in conference play. Memphis won the first game 7-3.

Junior catcher Lindsay Kelso and senior first baseman Kara Ross both continued their hot hitting. Both players went 2-for-4 in the game with Kelso collecting her 15th RBI of the season. Sophomore shortstop Leila Dolfo also made a strong performance, going 1-for-2 with an RBI and two walks.

Senior Nicki Johnson (6-5) pitched a complete game in the loss, allowing five earned runs with three walks and three strikeouts.

UTEP took an early 5-0 lead to begin the game, scoring three runs in the first and two in the second. The Miners scored the five runs off three hits and a couple Memphis errors. Only two of the runs were earned.

Memphis scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Sophomore second baseman Tori Gross and sophomore right fielder Brittany Gooch led off the inning with back-to-back singles and were moved to first and second on a groundout from Dolfo. Kelso then scored the Lady Tigers' first run of the game with an RBI single down the left field line.

In the sixth inning, Memphis again began with back-to-back singles, this time from Ross and junior Melissa Nance. Gross was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out before Dolfo hit an RBI single to center field.

UTEP's Stacie Townsend earned the win after pitching a complete game with nine strikeouts. Townsend also found success at the plate going 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored.
