Cross Country Competes in Brooks Memphis Twilight Classic

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The University of Memphis men's and women's cross country teams competed in the Brooks Memphis Twilight Classic on Saturday, October 6. The meet is the largest night time cross country meet east of the Mississippi River. The women's 5k race took off at 8:10 p.m., while the men's 8k followed at 8:50 p.m. The women placed 12th out of 41 teams and the men's team finished 19th out of 42 teams.
The women's 5k race had 329 competitors. Junior Emily Malinowski croseed the line first for the Lady Tigers placing 18th, in a time of 18:39.88. Freshman Tina Sherratt ran a 18:58.58, finishing under 19 minutes once again for 25th place. Sophomore Anneli Uys finished the race in 19:40.96, freshmen Lyndsey Ratasiewicz and Jessie Wilks rounded out the pack in 20:24.97 and 21:57.20.
In the field of 341 male competitors, sophomore Jorgen Ekdahl placed 65th to cross the line in 26:16.46. Freshman Jacob Chapman continues to drop his time, finishing the race in a time of 26:29.65, almost a minute off last weekend's time. Freshman Wesley Garrett 27:35.04, senior Sam James 27:43.23 and freshman Joe Coneo Jr. 27:44.30 rounded out the top five finishers.
Both cross country teams will return to action on October 13, at the University of Evansville Invitational.
