EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The University of Memphis men's and women's cross country teams competed at the University of Evansville Invitational today. The men's team took home a fifth place finish in the 8k race, while the women's team did not field a full squad for the 5k.
In a day that saw personal bests by the entire men's team, freshman Jacob Chapman crossed the line first for the Tigers in a time of 26:09, for 18th place. Fellow teammate sophomore Jorgen Ekdahl was three steps behind him for a 21st place finishing time of 26:20.
Senior Sam James and freshman Wesley Garrett both broke 27 minutes for the first time crossing the line in times of 26:34 and 26:38, respectively.
Junior Juan Arboleda finished in 27:22, freshmen Joe Coneo Jr. and Guy Hudson rounded out the team, finishing in 27:50 and 28:35.
"Today was a pretty good day. Everyone looked like they are continuing to improve each week," said Coach Mike Power. "We're looking a lot better for conference in two weeks."
The women's side had personal bests from every runner. Freshman Tina Sherratt led the women's side as she tallied a 5th place finish, crossing the line in 18:21. Sophomore Anneli Uys placed 10th, with a time of 18:43.
Freshmen Lyndsey Ratasiewicz and Jessie Wilks both knotched season bests as they finished with times of 19:49 and 21:37.
"With a high number of personal bests over the weekend, it shows that practice is working," said Power. "I am looking forward to having a full team at conference in two weeks. Overall, this was our best race all year. The team looked good and I am ready for conference."
Both the men's and women's cross country teams will take next week off, while preparing for the Conference USA Championships. The championships will be held in Santa Teresa, N.M. on October 27, hosted by UTEP.
