Shelby Burton slammed 12 kills, and the Memphis defense combined for 13.5 blocks to breeze to a 3-0 win over Rice in Conference USA action on Friday evening. The Tigers improve to 17-8 on the year, with a 6-3 record in league play.
Sarah Bury and Ashley Liford put down nine kills each, while Kelsey Labrum and Rebekah Strickland added seven kills a piece. Strickland, who had a career night, also finished the night with a personal-best seven blocks. Burton made five blocks to go with a .556 attacking percentage for the Memphis offense.
Memphis limited the Owls to just .020 hitting for the match, while collecting a .299 average of its own. Rice hit .000 in each of the first two frames.
Bury and libero Christine Bach led the Tigers backrow efforts with 10 and 12 digs each.
Memphis will return to the court on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. when it plays host to Houston.
