Sarah Bury put down 19 kills and made 12 digs to lead a group of three Tigers to put up double-doubles, as Memphis fought its way to a 3-1 win over Houston at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse Sunday afternoon. The win was Memphis' fifth consecutive over Houston and assures the Tigers of their seventh straight season with at least a .500 season.
Bury, who also made three rejections, was joined by double-double performers Ashley Liford (14 kills, 10 digs) and Laura Côté (52 assists, 10 digs). Tiger middles were solid as Shelby Burton slammed 11 kills and hit .435. She added two aces and six blocks. For the second straight contest, middle blocker Rebekah Strickland provided Memphis with solid production on the inside, banging down a career-high eight kills and making three blocks. Freshman Kelsey Labrum rounded out the four Tigers to record double-figures in kills, finishing the day with 10. Memphis hit .299 as a team.
On the defensive side of things, Memphis made 10.0 blocks and got a match-best 25 digs from freshman libero Christine Bach. The Tigers held Houston to attacking clips of .146, .088 and .190 in games one, two and four, respectively.
Houston got a double-double of 18 kills and 14 digs from Justine Farmer. Hannah Sullivan chipped in with 13 kills. Barbara Freitas led Houston with six blocks.
With an 18-7 mark, Memphis will prepare for non-conference competition on Tuesday, when it plays host to SEC rival Ole Miss. First serve is slated for 7 p.m.
