Memphis, Tn - The University of Memphis Tiger baseball team (15-30, 8-11) lost it's seventh-straight game and fifth C-USA contest on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Green Wave of Tulane (32-16-1, 15-4-1) by a score of 9-3. A solid effort by junior pitcher Jonathan Leicester and an equally impressive outing by Henry Bonilla of Tulane were the main story in this game, it just so happened that Bonilla's success lasted longer today.
Tulane jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after four-and-a-half and were looking to put this one away early.
The Tigers then began chipping away at the Green Wave's three run lead in the fifth, when junior shortstop Gabe Interiano scored on a throwing error by the catcher who failed to throw out sophomore center-fielder Paul Reuer at second and Memphis then trailed 3-1, after five. Tulane would answer back the following innig, capitalizing on two wild pitches and a passed ball by the Tigers to take 5-1 lead into the bottom of the sixth. In the top of the seventh, the Green Wave came crashing through again, scoring three runs to then take an 8-1 lead into the bottom of the inning. Memphis kept the scoring trend alive in the seventh, as they would grab a run off a double down the line in right by senior right-fielder Henry Castor, scoring Reuer and making the score 8-2 after seven. Tulane and the Memphis would both add another run but for the Tigers, it was just too little, too late.
Reuer was effective at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a double and two singles, two runs scored and also swiped two stolen bases which now give him 13 total, on the year.
Leicester (0-10) went four full, giving up three earned on four hits and stuck out five of the 21 batters he faced. He is still searching for his first win of the season.
Bonilla (6-3) for the Green Wave, lasted seven innings and allowed only one earned run on nine hits while fanning seven, in his sixth win of the year.
The final game of this three-game Conference USA series will conclude tomorrow, April 30th at 1 p.m. Memphis will be looking to snap a seven-game losing streak, but more importantly the Tigers will be looking to make up much-needed ground in the C-USA standings, having lost five straight within the conference.
