MEMPHIS, TENN. - After cruising to an 8-0 lead at the half, the University of Memphis Tiger soccer team (11-4) eventually slammed the door on the Bisons of Libscomb, shutting them out 10-0. The double-digit total for Memphis ties the school record for goals scored which was previously set during the 1997 season. The Tigers did finish with a school record 12 assists which overtakes the old record of 10 which happened in 1997, as well. Memphis was led by their lethal combo on top, juniors Sean Fraser and Lars Thorstensen, who both tallied hat-tricks with four and three goals, respectively.
Memphis outshot Libscomb 31-3 with 23 of those shots on goal. Bison goalkeeper Bryan Ayer actually finished with 12 saves on the loss and was a lone bright spot for Libscomb. Tiger goalkeeper Clark Talley (Houston H.S.) grabbed a share of the shutout in tonight's match which improves his total to 3.5, on the year.
The first 22 minutes were all Thorstensen and Fraser, as they alternated for the first five goals and set the rapid-fire pace for the Tigers. Also scoring for Memphis were sophomore forward Kirk Ricketts, junior midfielder Justin Stralka (Christian Brothers H.S.) and senior striker Tommy White (Germantown H.S.) Stralka also finished with three assists while Fraser, Thorstensen and freshman midfielder Grant Paule (Houston H.S.) each finished with two in the blowout.
Memphis will now rest up for a few days, before taking the pitch on Saturday, October 28th when they will host the Billikens of Saint Louis (8-3-2, 3-1-1),who are coming into the match ranked 20th in the nation. This match will serve as the Conference USA regular-season championship, as the Billikens are currently second in league play behind the Tigers. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Echles Field.
