MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The University of Memphis (9-4-0, 4-2-0) played host to 18th ranked UAB at Echles on Wednesday evening in a conference match crucial to both teams. The Tigers were riding a five game winning streak, while the Blazers were on a four game streak of their own.
The first half was a physical one, with no scoring by either team. Tommy White, the senior forward from Germantown High School, broke the scoring ice in the 58th minute, when he took a corner kick from senior midfielder Michael Shipman and put it past Blazer goalkeeper David Clemente.
In the 65th minute, tiger defender Stephen Lewis was sent off after collecting his second yellow card of the match, and the Tigers were forced to play the last 25 minutes of regulation with one less man than UAB. The Tiger defense held up well, but with 12 minutes left in regulation time, Jermie Frankson tied the score at one apiece. That is how regulation time would end.
The Tigers played 26 valiant minutes in overtime, but the man advantage of the Blazers wore the Tiger defense out. In the 106th minute, Tony McManus of UAB lobbed a pass across the middle and a streaking Juan Carlos Deras placed a header past Tiger keeper Clark Talley to end the game.
Memphis fell to 4-2 in conference, while UAB is now 3-1-1. The Tigers schedule does not get any easier, either. On Saturday evening, Memphis hosts Marquette, who has been ranked as high as seventh nationally earlier this season. It is a must win for the Golden Eagles, who have struggled in C-USA so far this season, and a win for the Tigers secures them a spot in the C-USA tournament. Game time Saturday night will be 7 p.m. at Echles field.
