CHICAGO, ILL. - It's now five straight wins for the University of Memphis Tiger soccer team (9-3, 4-1) including their third conference win in a row, after defeating the Blue Demons of DePaul (0-11, 0-5) on Friday afternoon, 3-1. DePaul is still winless in 2000 while Memphis has nine victories thus far, two more than their season total last year. This victory also improves the Tigers road mark to 3-1.
Three different Tigers found the net during the match, including local senior midfielder Michael Shipman (Houston H.S.) who registered his first strike of the season. Memphis Head Coach Richie Grant after the game said, "It was a tough place to play but we came out and did what we had to do."
Junior midfielder Justin Stralka (Christian Brothers H.S.) wasted little time, as he scored in the 12th minute after taking a throw in from junior defender Chris Schmidtand slipping it past DePaul's Josh Chavero, for a 1-0 lead. Memphis kept the pressure on in the first half and increased their total in the 25th minute when Shipman took a pass from junior striker Lars Thorstensen and drilled home his first goal of the year, for a 2-0 advantage. The Blue Demons bounced right back with a strike of their own, four minutes later but went into halftime down, 2-1. The Tigers then put the finishing touches in the 69th minute after senior midfielder Nick Glaser settled a cross from the set-up man Thorstensen and knocked home his second goal of the year, for the game-winner.
Coming into this match, Chavero was leading C-USA in saves-per-game but in this match, conceded three Memphis goals.
The Tigers must now face the tougher end of their home schedule in the next two weeks when they will host #22 UAB, Marquette (previously ranked as high as seventh in the nation) and perennial national and C-USA powerhouse #15 Saint Louis.
This next week they will host the Blazers of UAB on Wednesday, October 18th at 7 p.m., before taking on the Golden Eagles of Marquette on Saturday, October 21st at 7 p.m.. Both matches will be held at Echles Field.
