MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The University of Houston (15-6, 10-1) clinched the American Division title with a 3-1 victory over the University of Memphis (8-19, 1-11), Friday.
The two teams battled to a 4-4 early tie before Houston stretched the lead to 10-4 before an Amie Hamilton kill ended the run. The Cougars again stretched the lead, 12-7, before the two teams exchanged side outs 12 times. Houston went up 14-8 before the two teams again sided each other out a dozen times before a Morgan Wallen kill ended game one in favor of the Cougars, 15-8.
The Cougars came out and dominated the Tigers in game two, running out to 12-1 and hitting .379 with 13 kills and just two errors en route a 15-2 win.
Game three initially swayed toward Houston, with the Cougars up 12-4 before the Memphis attack became effective.
Memphis took the emotion of senior Rosie Glenn surpassing the 1,000-kill mark and battled back to 13-11 on a Hamilton service ace. Houston sided out Hamilton's serve, but were then aced three consecutive times by Glenn, giving the Tigers a 14-13 lead. Five side outs later, Houston tied the game at 14 when a Memphis attack flew out of bounds. When the Tigers won back the serve, Sarah Wengler downed a Houston dig which flew over the net for 15-14, before the duo of Jeannie Robison and Amanda Boatright blocked a Kristin Guidish attack to give Memphis the 16-14 win.
But the Tigers ran out of emotion and Houston found a way to win, running out to 10-0 before Memphis could down a kill on their own serve. The Cougars finished the game, 15-6.
Glenn finished with 19 kills and became just the sixth player in Memphis history to surpass the 1,000 kill-1,000 dig mark. Freshman Amanda Boatright had another big game, recording a career-high 14 kills, while junior April Harriman added 11 kills. Robison had 57 assists and led the defense with 14 digs in the Tigers? loss.
Houston had five players in double-digit kills, led by junior Stephanie Heiskell with 20. Bobbi Stewart also came close to the 20-kill plateau with 19 kills, while Kristin Guidish finished with 14. Jullian King and Michelle Frazier each had 13 in the Cougars? 15th win of the season.
