Memphis Rallies with Eight-Run Sixth to Clinch Series Win Over UTSA

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis (21-29, 12-12 American) baseball team erupted for eight runs in the sixth inning to defeat American Conference-leading UTSA (34-17, 16-8 American), 10-5, Sunday afternoon at FedExPark Avron Fogelman Field. The win secured the series victory for the Tigers in their final home series of the season.
Trailing 4-2 entering the bottom of the sixth, Memphis sent 11 batters to the plate and collected seven hits in the frame to completely swing the momentum. James Smith IV capped the inning with a towering three-run, 383-foot homer to left field as the Tigers turned a two-run deficit into a commanding 10-4 advantage.
The Tigers totaled 12 hits on the afternoon, led by Smith who finished 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI. Trae Cassidy added a pair of hits, including a solo homer, while Webb Watson contributed two hits and two RBI in the victory.
Logan Rushing (2-3) earned the win in relief for Memphis, while Mike DeBattista (2-3) suffered the loss for UTSA. Seth Garner turned in a strong start for the Tigers, allowing just one unearned run over 5.0 innings with five strikeouts.
Memphis will face Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro on Tuesday before rounding out the regular season with an away series at Charlotte, starting Thursday.

- Trae Cassidy led off the fifth inning with a solo home run to deep right field, giving the Tigers a 2-1 lead.
- The Roadrunners responded with a three-run sixth inning behind RBI singles from Diego Diaz and Cade Sadler before adding another run on a double steal play to reclaim a 4-2 advantage.
- Memphis exploded in the bottom half of the sixth inning, scoring eight runs on seven hits. Shane Cox and Cassidy each delivered RBI singles before Webb Watson lined a two-run single up the middle. Brady McAbee later added an RBI single before Smith IV crushed a three-run homer to left field to put Memphis ahead 10-4.
- UTSA threatened in the seventh with runners aboard, but Davis Oswalt shut the door over the final two innings to secure the series-clinching victory for the Tigers.
