Tigers Ride Big Innings, Take Game Two at UAB, 13-9

Memphis totaled 14 hits and drew eight walks in the contest, scoring in five different innings including a four-run seventh that proved to be the difference. The Tigers also applied pressure on the basepaths throughout the game, swiping multiple bags and forcing UAB into three errors.
James Smith IV led the offensive effort with three hits and three RBI, while Freddy Rodriguez, Brady McAbee, Javon Hernandez, Michael Gupton and Smith IV each added two hits. Shane Cox delivered a key two-run home run, and Gupton and Rodriguez both drove in two runs as part of their multi-hit days. On the mound, David Case (4-6) earned the win after tossing six innings, while Davis Oswalt picked up the save in relief.
Memphis will look to claim the series win tomorrow in the rubber match with UAB. First pitch is set for 1:05 p.m. at Young Memorial Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Memphis jumped out to an early lead in the first inning, scoring three runs on RBI singles from Brady McAbee and James Smith IV along with a run-scoring groundout by Michael Gupton.
- UAB answered with two runs in the second before the Tigers extended their lead in the third on a two-run home run from Shane Cox to make it 5-2.
- The Blazers responded with a four-run third inning to take a 6-5 lead, capitalizing on timely extra-base hits and a sacrifice fly.
- After a scoreless stretch through the middle innings, Memphis erupted for four runs in the seventh, taking advantage of two UAB errors and a two-run single from Smith IV to reclaim a 9-6 advantage.
- UAB cut into the deficit with two runs in the bottom half of the seventh, but the Tigers answered again in the eighth with a two-run single from Freddy Rodriguez.
- Memphis added two more runs in the ninth on RBI hits from Gupton and a wild pitch to extend the lead to 13-9.
- Davis Oswalt shut the door in the eighth and ninth to secure the win and even the series.
