Seventh-Inning Rally Comes Up Short as Tigers Drop Opener at Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A final-inning rally was quelled as the University of Memphis (14-28, 3-13 American) softball team fell to Charlotte (23-19, 8-8 American) by a score of 3-2 Friday night.
After falling behind by three runs after three innings, Memphis' offense waited until the seventh inning to cut into the deficit before ending the game with the potential game-winning run on first base.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Charlotte was on the board first after an RBI single off the bat of Jenna Lord in the first inning.
- Neely Taylor logged Memphis' only hit in the top half with a one-out single.
- Both offenses logged a hit in the second, with Mya Clark earning Memphis' while also stranding runners on second and third in her second inning in the circle.
- In the third inning, another RBI by Lord, this time a double, stretched Charlotte's lead and she later scored on a sacrifice fly by Sydney Lewis.
- Memphis stranded two runners in the fourth inning after Jasmine Mack was hit by a pitch and Jaila Mitchell reached on a bunt single while attempting to move Mack to second.
- Taylor Caton entered in relief with runners on second and third with one out and induced a groundout and popout to keep the 49ers off the board in the bottom of the fourth.
- Both Memphis and Charlotte had one hit in the sixth, with Ariel Davis picking up her first hit of the game for the Tigers.
- Memphis came out aggressive, but also patient in the bottom of the seventh inning.
- Isabella Hune led off the inning with a double to center field.
- Mya Clark followed by drawing a full-count walk.
- Khamiyah Brown entered as a pinch hitter and moved both Hune and Clark into scoring position.
- Kylie Waldrep, who previously entered in right field, reached on an RBI infield single to end the shutout bid.
- After Waldrep stole second and Neely Taylor loaded the bases with a walk, Faith Brown sent a fly ball to left field for a sacrifice fly that cut the deficit to just one run.
- Ariel Davis lined out to first to end the game with the game-tying run on second and game-winning run on first.
- Memphis has now been hit by a pitch 31 times this season, which is tied for the fourth-most by a Memphis squad in a single season.
- The Tigers now have 12 sacrifice flies on the year, the fifth-highest single-season mark in program history.
- The second game of the doubleheader was Memphis' ninth 10-plus hit game as a team this season and was the fourth time this season that the Tigers put up at least 10 runs in a game.
- Kylie Waldrep was 1-for-2 with an RBI after entering as a substitute.
- Neely Taylor extends her active hit streak to six games with a 1-for-3 day at the plate with a walk drawn, the second-longest by a Tiger this season.
- Isabella Hune logged a double and a run scored in the loss.
