Gupton’s Four-RBI Day Not Enough as Tigers Fall to Bears

The Tigers scored first in the game but would face a 4-1 deficit by the end of the first inning after a two-out, three RBI single by the Bears. Missouri State extended its lead to 10-1 in the third inning, scoring six runs on six hits. Memphis center fielder Michael Gupton gave the team life in the fourth with a bases-clearing triple to cut the Mo. State lead to 10-4. The Bears added four runs in the middle innings while the Tigers only managed to add a single run down the stretch as Mo. State took game two 14-5, clinching the series.
The Tigers will look to avoid the sweep when they return to Hammons Field for the final game of the series against Missouri State tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Tiger shortstop Javon Hernandez led off the game with a single and would be brought home later in the inning on a James Smith IV groundout to second base.
- Missouri State responded quickly in the bottom of the inning, scoring their first run on a Taeg Gollert single to right center.
- Mo. State plated three more runs in the first after a ball hit by Bear batter Max Knight fell just fair and out of the reach of Tiger left fielder Webb Watson, scoring three runners.
- The Bears blew the game open in the third, scoring one run on a single, two more on a double and finally three more runs after a Caden Bogenpohl 452-foot home run to right field.
- Memphis showed signs of life in the top of the fourth inning, loading the bases before center fielder Michael Gupton hit a triple to right field that brought home three Memphis runners.
- Carter Bergman hit the second home run of the game for Mo. State in the fourth, this time to left field.
- Mo. State added another run to extend their lead to 12-4 with a sacrifice fly to right field in the fifth inning.
- Gupton collected his fourth RBI of the day with a sacrifice fly of his own in the sixth inning that scored first baseman Tyler Harrington.
- In the bottom of the sixth Mo. State hit three doubles, scoring two more runs in the process.
- A trio of Mo. State relief pitchers shut down the Memphis bats in the late innings, combining for four innings pitched, allowing no runs on just two hits to finish out a 14-5 win for the Bears.

- Javon Hernandez stole a for the Tigers, bringing the team's season total to 31 steals, which ranks in the top 40 nationally and first in the American. Hernandez is 6-for-6 on stolen base attempts this season.
- Center fielder Michael Gupton continued his offensive outburst, hitting a clutch, three-RBI triple and a sacrifice fly.
- His four RBI are the most he's had in a game as a Tiger.
- Gupton's triple was his eighth extra-base hit of the season, the most by any Memphis batter.
- Has logged 14 RBI on the year, the most on the team.
- Saturday marked his fourth multi-RBI game of the season.
- After a single today, second baseman Shane Cox continued his streak of reaching base safely in every game thus far and continues his seven-game hitting streak.
- Cox leads the Tigers in batting average (.379), hits (22), doubles (5), and triples (1).
- Cade Hitson pinch-hit in the ninth inning and recorded his first hit at the D1 level, a single through the right side of the infield.
- Catcher Brady McAbee entered the game in the seventh inning and hit a double down the left field line in the eighth.
- The double was the first of his career at the D1 level.
- RHP Nolan McCracken delivered two excellent innings of work in the seventh and eighth innings, allowing no baserunners while striking out two Missouri State batters in his longest outing this season.
