Brewer Promoted to Assistant Coach, Wooten Joins Staff as Director of Operations
Jan 22, 2026 | Softball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis softball head coach Trena Prater has announced staff changes prior to the 2026 season, with Cassady Brewer moving into an assistant coaching role and Aleyla Wooten taking up the responsibilities of the director of softball operations.
"I'm really excited that God has aligned the stars and now Coach Brewer has an opportunity to be elevated from her director of operations role to coaching in games," said Prater. "I was able to get a little feel for this last year when Coach Arevalo went out on maternity leave and she was elevated to a coaching role. I think she will be an asset to my coaching staff this year. She's been given more coaching responsibilities, so this new role will allow her to continue to coach our players during games."
Brewer will enter her second season working with the program, having spent the 2025 season as the director of softball operations during Coach Prater's first season at the helm.
The former American Conference Rookie of the Year and two-time all-conference and NFCA All-Region selection had previous stints with the UCF and Florida softball programs before joining the Tigers as Memphis had its most successful season since 2019, culminating in the Tigers' first American Conference Tournament win since 2018.
"From day one, Aleyla has already been a blessing coming in as our director of operations," Prater said of Wooten. "She's reliable, efficient and she thinks outside of the box. I like that she understands sports from a different side of the fence since she was a tennis player and coaches tennis too. She gives me a neutral set of eyes on things that I wouldn't see or think about. We are very lucky to have her here to help us transition into our spring season."
Wooten joins the staff after already spending five months at Memphis as an athletics administrative assistant. In her new role with the softball program, she will oversee day-to-day operations and manage travel, scheduling and game-day logistics.
A native of nearby Lakeland, Tennessee, Wooten was a successful collegiate tennis player at both Prairie View A&M and Eastern Illinois. As a member of the Panthers, Wooten was an everyday starter on court one in both singles and doubles during her junior season as she earned All-Ohio Valley Conference Doubles Team honors after being named to the All-Ohio Valley Conference Second Team in her sophomore season in 2024.
She was also a member of the Intercollegiate Athletic Board, SAAC Committee, Commissioner's Honor Roll and was named to the Academic All-District and ITA All-Academic Teams. Additionally, Wooten worked as an academic and development intern at Eastern Illinois and also served as an administrative intern at Boston College.
