Tigers Rally for 10-Unanswered Runs, Take Series Finale from South Florida
Apr 06, 2025 | Baseball
The Tigers (12-19, 1-8 AAC) exploded for 13 runs on 13 hits to earn their first AAC victory of the season while South Florida (19-10, 7-2 AAC) saw its eight-game winning streak snapped and suffered just its second conference loss of the year.
"The guys willed their way through that one," head coach Matt Riser said. "The offense got going a little bit … It was good to see. We gave up a few early but answered in the bottom of the first with three runs. There was a sense and attitude that hey men, today's the day this thing ends."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Bulls got on the board first with a pair of runs in the top of the first behind a sac-fly and an RBI single by Rafael Betancourt.
• The Tigers answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the first. Seth Cox got Memphis on the board with a bases-loaded RBI single through the left side before Cy Turner reached on a fielder's choice and drove in Shane Cox to tie the game. Will Vasseur's one-out RBI single to center field gave the Tigers an early 3-2 lead.
• The Bulls jumped back in front with a pair of second inning home runs. Carlos Jacome led the frame off with a solo shot to tie the game at three runs apiece before Jackson Mayo's three-run shot gave South Florida a 6-3 lead.
• A two-run single by South Florida's Marcus Brodil in the fourth inning extended the Bulls' lead to 8-3.
• The Tigers began their rally with a three-run fifth inning. Seth Cox came to the plate with the bases loaded for the second time in the game and delivered a two-run single to center field. That led to a sac-fly by Vasseur that brought catcher Justin Fogel in to score, trimming the South Florida lead to a pair.
• Memphis added three more runs in the seventh to jump in front for the first time since the bottom of the first inning. Vasseur drove in Turner with a single to left-center field for the first run of the inning. A catcher's interference call during Creek Robertson's at-bat loaded the bases and led to a wild pitch that allowed Vasseur to score and tie the game at 8-8. Cade Greer, the very next batter, also reached first base via catcher's interference to load the bases once again, leading to an RBI walk by Shane Cox to give Memphis a 9-8 lead.
• The Tigers got four important insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth. A one-out, two-run double by Daniel Perez made the score 11-8 before a wild pitch allowed pitcher Michael Dallas (who was pinch-running for Cade Tucker) to come in to score. Robertson then laced an RBI single through the left side, driving in Perez to make it 10-unanswered runs.
• RHP Kylan Stepter made his first appearance since March 8 and slammed the door on the Bulls in the ninth. He did not allow a hit but walked three and struck out one to seal the 13-8 victory.
