No. 16 Memphis Travels to San Antonio for Clash with UTSA
Mar 03, 2025 | Men's Basketball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis men's basketball goes for its first American Athletic Conference regular season crown Tuesday night when the 16th-ranked Tigers visit San Antonio to face UTSA. Tip-off with the Roadrunners is scheduled for 6 p.m. on ESPN+ at the Convocation Center.
Memphis (24-5, 14-2 AAC) holds a one-game lead in The American with two games to play. On Tuesday, the Tigers seek their first regular season conference title in 12 years since their final season in Conference USA in 2012-13.
A win against the Roadrunners would clinch at least a share of the regular season crown for Memphis and the No. 1 seed in next week's AAC Championship. If North Texas loses Monday night to Wichita State, the Tigers would also clinch.
Redshirt senior Dain Dainja continued his dominance Sunday afternoon in Birmingham, as the big man dropped 16 points and a career-high 17 points for his third-straight double-double to help lead Memphis past UAB, 88-81. He was named AAC Player of the Week on Monday for his efforts, the first of his career.
The Brooklyn Park, Minnesota native has averaged 21.0 points, 12.7 rebounds and 3.0 blocks over the last three games, while shooting 64.3 percent from the floor.
Sophomore guard PJ Haggerty scored 25 points against the Blazers, including 17 in the second half, and enters Tuesday's contest with three-consecutive games of 20 or more points.
Tuesday's meeting will be just the third all-time between Memphis and UTSA, but the first in San Antonio. The Tigers won a 78-72 decision in Memphis on Dec. 20, 1993 and then took a 107-101 victory in overtime last season at FedExForum.
The matchup will be the first of the season against a ranked opponent for the Roadrunners, who brings an 11-17 overall record into the contest. UTSA is coming off its largest AAC win in program history after defeating Rice 84-56 Sunday afternoon at home on senior day.
