Tigers Prepare for Conference Battles with Temple, FAU

PHILADELPHIA – Memphis women's basketball begins the week with a road contest at Temple on Wednesday, Feb. 5, at 10 a.m. CT followed by a home game against Florida Atlantic on Saturday, Feb. 8, at 2:00 p.m.
The Tigers (5-15, 3-6 AAC) are coming off a 75-69 victory over East Carolina powered by Tanyuel Welch's career-high-tying 21 points and 19 more from Tilly Boler, who is second in the American in points per game (17.2). Alasia Smith is leading the conference through nine games in rebounding (12.0 per game) and DeeDee Hagemann is also first in assists (5.3 per game).
Game One: Temple
The Owls (12-9, 6-4 AAC) are looking to end a three-game losing streak after starting 6-1 in conference play. They lost by two to Tulane, three at North Texas and nine at UTSA. Despite an impressive 7-5 record away from home, they are just 4-4 at the Liacouras Center.
Memphis picked up a narrow victory in Philly last season, winning 59-57 behind 18 points and 10 rebounds from Alasia Smith. It was the second consecutive victory for Memphis, who now trail the all-time series six games to 12 including 2-8 in the City of Brotherly Love.
Diane Richardson is in her third season at the helm of Temple. In 2023-24, they held a three-way tie at the top of the regular season standings behind a 13-5 conference record. Senior guard Tiarra East leads the team in scoring with 14.0 points per game. The Owls lead the AAC in points per conference game with 71.0.

The Tigers will host Florida Atlantic as part of a week-long celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day. The Owls (10-13, 2-8 AAC) will be taking on Wichita State on Wednesday evening in search of their second consecutive win. They snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 66-61 victory over Rice at home last Saturday.
Memphis took on FAU for the first time ever last season; the game was moved from Elma Roane Fieldhouse to FedEx Forum due to snow on campus. The Tigers jumped out to a 28-8 first-quarter lead and eventually won, 76-56, behind 19 points and five three-pointers from Kai Carter.
Florida Atlantic's head coach is Memphis women's basketball alumnae Jennifer Sullivan. Sullivan played from 2001-2005, totaling 800 points, 310 rebounds and 99 steals. She was a member of the 2003-04 team that reached the second round of the NIT, leading the team with a 57.8% field goal percentage. Sullivan began her coaching as an assistant at Rhodes and most recently was an assistant at Tennessee under Kellie Harper from 2019-21 before accepting the FAU job.
Mya Perry scores 15.4 points per game, including 16.8 points in conference which ranks third behind Boler and UTSA's Jordyn Jenkins. They are 12th out of 13 AAC teams in conference margin (-9.1 per game); Memphis ranks eighth with a -3.1 average margin.
