MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis women's basketball returns home to take on UAB on Wednesday, Feb. 17, at 7:00 p.m. before heading to Tampa for a matchup with USF on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 6:00 p.m. CT.
The Tigers (6-18, 4-9 AAC) return home after suffering road losses to North Texas and UTSA as they look to win a third consecutive home game and improve their record at Elma Roane Fieldhouse to 6-5 on the season. Memphis remains the only team in the American to have a top-five scorer (Tilly Boler, second, 17.3 points), rebounder (Alasia Smith, second, 9.3 rebounds) and assister (DeeDee Hagemann, first, 6.0 assists) in conference play.
Game One: UAB
The Blazers (15-10, 6-7 AAC) are playing their second consecutive road game after losing by 10 points to Temple in Philadelphia last weekend. Currently in sixth place with a two-game advantage over Memphis, a loss could make things interesting as UAB prepares to travel to Rice and North Texas before hosting Tulane.
The Tigers were defeated, 73-56, in Birmingham on January 8 behind 20 points each from Maddie Walsh and Journey Armstead. Alasia Smith had 13 points and 17 rebounds for Memphis. The loss moved the all-time record to 34-23 in favor of Memphis, who are 19-7 against the Blazers at Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
UAB is led by fifth-year forward Maddie Walsh, who has made 43 threes and blocked 25 shots this season, the only player in the conference to do so. Walsh, Journey Armstead and Jade Weathersby all average over 10 points per game, with Armstead adding over four rebounds and four assists per game. Randy Norton is in his 12th year at the helm of the Blazers.
Game Two: South Florida
The Tigers will take on South Florida (18-8, 11-2 AAC) for the first time this season; the Bulls are again fighting for the top spot in the conference having won seven in a row. They currently sit two games behind leaders UTSA, who they own the tiebreaker over, and will play at Charlotte on Wednesday night.
The 2021 and 2023 AAC regular season champions have defeated Memphis six times in a row dating back to the 2019-20 season. Last year, they stifled the Memphis offense en route to a 69-46 victory behind 24 points from Romi Levy.
Former Florida State player Sammie Puisis leads USF with 14.9 points per game behind spectacular three-point shooting. She ranks fourth in Division I with 82 3PM and 32nd with a 42.3% hit rate. They have the number one scoring offense in conference play and the number two defense. Jose Fernandez is in his 25th season leading the Bulls; he ranks 35th among active coaches with 480 career wins.
