Tiger Defense Swarms ETSU in 60-54 Victory
Nov 22, 2025 | Women's Basketball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis women's basketball used a big second quarter to take the lead and never looked back on Saturday afternoon at Elma Roane Fieldhouse, as they overcame ETSU, 60-54.
The Tigers improve to 3-3 on the young season and snap a five-game losing streak at home, their first win at the Fieldhouse since late February. A season-high five players scored eight or more points, led by season-highs from Jordan Hunter (12) and Amauri Williams (11).
It was the defense that again led the way for Memphis; their 54 points allowed was the fewest since Feb. 28, 2024, against UTSA (54). Their 20 field goals made on offense was the lowest mark this season, but they held the Buccaneers (1-5) to just 17 field goals and 29% shooting. It was the fewest field goals in a win since they recorded 20 in a 54-44 win over Tulane on Feb. 24, 2024.
The Tigers were on the wrong side of the defensive slugfest in the first quarter; after converting two of their first three field goals to open the game, they would not record a point for the rest of the frame as ETSU crawled to an 11-4 advantage.
The second quarter is where things turned decisively. Brooklynn Charlo connected on a pair of threes, and Hunter added another as the Tigers went on a 13-0 run midway through the quarter, eventually winning it, 22-11, to lead by five at the intermission. They forced 10 ETSU turnovers in the period and 23 overall.
The frontcourt trio of Williams, Paris Gaines and Brooklyn Alexander imposed themselves in the third quarter, combining for 14 of Memphis' 19 points. The Buccaneers went on a 6-0 run late in the third quarter and appeared to be regaining momentum before Alexander grabbed an offensive rebound and drew free throws at the end of the period, putting the lead at 46-35.
ETSU got as close as three, but the Tiger defense strung together six stops in succession to get it back to nine. Tamya Smith and Hunter each had five points in the final frame as the hosts made enough free throws to secure the victory.
Gaines used her big third quarter to finish with eight points and eight rebounds, and Chae Harris had eight points, six rebounds, four assists, three steals and a block. Anala Nelson and Paige Lyons each had 14 points to pace the Buccaneers.
Memphis will conclude its four-game homestand this Tuesday, November 25, against Louisiana at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
